The 3-Step Confirmation Rule

Every trade that goes wrong can usually be traced to one missing step. Either the trend was not confirmed before the entry, or the zone was not meaningful, or there was no candlestick trigger and the entry was made on anticipation rather than confirmation. Often it is all three.

The 3-Step Confirmation Rule creates a mandatory sequence: no step can be skipped, and no trade can be entered until all three are satisfied.

  • Apply the 3-step confirmation sequence to any potential swing trade before committing capital.
  • Identify which step is missing when a setup looks promising but is not fully qualified.
  • Use this framework as a pre-trade mental checklist completable in under two minutes.

Step 1: Confirm the trend. Using the weekly and daily charts, confirm that the stock is in a clear uptrend for longs. Higher highs and higher lows on the daily, with price above the 50 EMA, is the minimum qualification.

Step 2: Confirm the zone. Price must be at or approaching a meaningful swing zone: a prior support level, demand zone, or key moving average that has been respected before. The zone creates the structural rationale for the stop loss.

Step 3: Wait for the trigger. The entry trigger is a specific candle pattern or a volume-supported break of structure at the zone. Entry is on the break of the trigger candle's high, not before.

To understand this with an example: A traffic signal has three lights for a reason. Green alone is not enough. A driver who requires all three to function in the correct sequence is not being overly cautious. They are being systematically safe.

Likewise, your setup must have 3-step confirmation. Step 1 sets the direction. Step 2 marks the intersection. Step 3 gives the go signal.

2 out of 3 is not a qualified setup. The missing element is precisely what will cause the trade to fail in a predictable way.

Always start with trend, then zone, then trigger. Starting with the trigger — seeing an exciting candle and then rationalising the trend and zone — is working backwards from excitement.

  • The 3-Step Confirmation Rule requires trend direction, zone confluence, and a candlestick or volume trigger to all be present before any entry is valid.
  • The steps must be applied in order. Any step that fails eliminates the trade.
  • This rule is most valuable not when it identifies good trades, but when it eliminates the marginal ones that look promising but lack one essential ingredient.

Take the next three setups you are considering. Before entering, run each through the three steps in writing:

(1) Is the trend confirmed on both weekly and daily?
(2) Is price at a meaningful, previously tested zone?
(3) Has a specific trigger candle formed?

If any setup fails a step, write down which step failed and why. Do not enter trades that fail.

In the next chapter, we formalise all of this into a structured pre-trade checklist — eight specific items that must all pass before capital is committed to any trade.
