Fundamentals That Actually Matter: A Swing Trader's Shortcut
A full fundamental analysis of a company can take hours. For a swing trader whose primary lens is technical, spending that time on every watchlist candidate is impractical and unnecessary.
The goal is not to value the business. The goal is to quickly identify whether institutional money is likely flowing in or out. Four data points, all publicly available within 5 minutes, answer that question.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Identify the four fundamental data points that matter most for swing traders.
- Complete a basic fundamental scan for any stock in under five minutes using publicly available data.
- Interpret those data points to determine whether fundamental conditions support the trade.
The Four Data Points
Revenue growth trend: A stock in a technical uptrend backed by accelerating revenue growth over the last two to three quarters has institutional demand supporting the chart structure.
Earnings momentum: Is net profit growing year over year? Earnings acceleration, particularly if it is beating analyst expectations, is a major catalyst for institutional buying.
Promoter holding: Has the promoter's shareholding been stable or increasing over the past four to six quarters? Consistent decline is a meaningful warning signal.
Sector tailwind: Is the sector currently in a favourable policy or demand environment? Sectors with government capex tailwinds, strong domestic consumption trends, or global demand momentum produce more sustained swing trends.

To understand this: A market vendor quickly checks four things before deciding how much fresh produce to order: last week's sales volume, whether the supplier's prices have changed, local demand signals, and whether a competitor's stall has closed. Four checks in minutes give a working picture. The four fundamental data points work identically.
Revenue trend (last 3 quarters) | ₹280 Cr, ₹310 Cr, ₹348 Cr | Accelerating growth: positive |
Earnings momentum | PAT up 24% YoY last quarter | Strong earnings momentum: positive |
Promoter holding | 52% stable over last 6 quarters | No promoter selling: positive |
Sector tailwind | Urban consumption growth strong currently | Sector demand supportive: positive |
Overall assessment | All four pass | Institutional buying likely supportive of technical trend |
Keep a simple tracking sheet for your watchlist with these four columns. A screenshot of a model tracking template is shown below — you can replicate this in Excel or Google Sheets.
Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Substituting a compelling business story for actual data
A well-written analyst report about a company's long-term prospects is not a substitute for checking the last three quarters of actual performance.
Mistake 2: Treating improving fundamentals as a reason to ignore poor technical structure
Improving fundamentals confirm the environment for a technical trade. They do not replace the technical setup.
Key Takeaways
- The four fundamental data points are revenue growth trend, earnings momentum, promoter holding stability, and sector tailwind. All can be checked in under 5 minutes.
- These data points identify whether institutional money is likely supportive of the technical trend.
- When all four pass, standard position sizing applies. When one or more fail, reduce size or skip.
Assignment
Build your fundamental tracking sheet now. Open a new spreadsheet (Excel or Google Sheets). Create the five columns from the template above.
Add the ten stocks on your current watchlist. Fill in each row by checking NSE, BSE, or Screener.in for the relevant data. Once complete, compare the fundamental scores to the technical setups.
Do the stocks with clean fundamentals also have the strongest chart structures? Record any discrepancies.
With the fundamentals module complete, we now move into the psychology of swing trading — the often-overlooked factor that determines whether a technically sound plan gets executed with discipline or abandoned under pressure.
