Central Depository Services (India) Limited was founded in 1999. Playing an integral role in India's capital markets, CDSL is one of India's two major securities depositories. It holds shares and securities in an electronic format. Through a Demat account linked with CDSL, you can buy or sell a range of financial instruments, including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc. It is listed on the National
Stock Exchange of India (NSE: CDSL).
CDSL Business Segments And Revenue Model
The primary business of CDSL is to provide depository services. It is akin to a bank where your securities are held electronically through the Demat account you have with your broker. It charges for the services it offers to all market participants including exchanges, clearing corporations, depository participants and investors.

- 1999: Receives a certificate from SEBI to start business

- 2022: Introduces Demat Debit and Pledge Instruction (DDPI), T+1 settlement, and Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR)
- 2023: Successfully implements the segregation of client securities by introducing client unpaid securities pledgee account (CUSPA) and enabled single sign-on for e-voting
- 2024: CDSL completes 25 years of operations and introduces T+0 settlement for selected securities
