NSE indices are benchmarks used to track the performance of a selected group of stocks listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). Every index is built for a specific purpose. The list of stocks in it is chosen accordingly. Some indices track the broader market. Others are built around a particular sector, theme or group of companies based on their size. The stocks also have different weights in the index.

So, instead of tracking dozens or hundreds of stocks individually, you can look at an index to get a quick sense of how that particular group is doing.

An NSE index gives a single number for a group of stocks. The number changes as the prices of those stocks change. Each stock in the index has a different weight. Hence, their influence on the overall index is different, too. You can check NSE indices live during market hours to see how different indices are moving.

A few things come together to determine how an index moves:

  • Companies enter an index only when they meet the rules laid down for that index.
  • When the constituent stocks rise or fall, the index value changes as well.
  • The weight of a stock is based on its free-float market capitalisation. So, a company with a larger weight has a bigger bearing on the index.
  • The composition of the index is not fixed forever. New stocks can be added or removed when NSE reviews it. Their weights can be changed, too.

The value of an NSE index depends on the stocks that make up the index, their market value and the weight assigned to each stock. Many broad-market NSE indices use the free-float market capitalisation method, where only shares readily available for public trading are considered.

The commonly used formula is:

Index Value = (Index Market Capitalisation / Base Free Float Market Capitalisation of index) * Base Index Value

The index market capitalisation changes as share prices move. The base market capitalisation and base index value come from the point at which the index was set up. Stock splits, rights issues and other corporate actions are adjusted for so that these changes do not distort the index.

Some NSE indices appear more often in market discussions because they cover widely followed parts of the market.

  • Nifty 50: Considers the top 50 companies as per market capitalisation and is widely used as a benchmark for the Indian equity market.
  • Nifty Next 50: Covers the next set of large companies outside the Nifty 50.
  • Nifty 100: Brings together the companies in the Nifty 50 and Nifty Next 50.
  • Nifty 500: Gives a broader view of the Indian equity market and covers large, mid and small-cap companies.
  • Nifty Bank: A sectoral index made up of major banking companies listed on the NSE that represents the performance of the banking sector.
  • Nifty IT: This one is centred on India's information technology companies.

NSE indices are not all built to track the same part of the market. Some cover a wide set of companies, while others are built around a sector, theme or particular investment approach.

  • Broad-based indices: These bring together companies from across the market. Nifty 50, Nifty 100 and Nifty 500 are some of the well-known examples.
  • Sectoral indices: Here, the index covers companies belonging to the same industry. For example, Nifty Bank covers banking. Nifty Auto covers the automobile. Nifty Pharma represents the pharmaceutical sector and so on.
  • Thematic indices: The companies in this index share a common theme. They may, however, be spread across different sectors. Nifty India Defence and Nifty India Consumption are examples.
  • Strategy indices: In this category, stock selection follows a particular investment factor. Nifty500 Momentum 50, Nifty100 Quality 30 and Nifty Dividend Opportunities 50 are some examples.

An index gives investors a way to look at market performance without tracking every stock individually. It can also be useful when comparing an investment with a relevant market benchmark. NSE notes that indices are used for benchmarking funds and as the basis for products such as index funds, ETFs and index derivatives.

  • Track market movements: A quick look at an index can tell you how a particular part of the market is doing.
  • Compare investments: Fund and portfolio returns are often compared with a suitable index to see how they have performed against the market.
  • Understand sectors: You may want to know what is happening in banking or IT. A sectoral index gives you a way to follow that industry separately.
  • Build passive investments: ETFs and index mutual funds let you invest in a set of stocks without having to choose each stock separately.

Several things can move an index because the companies within it respond to both company-specific and wider economic developments.

  • Financial results are closely watched in the market. A surprise profit or loss can lead to a quick move in the stock.
  • A rise in interest rates means higher borrowing costs. It can also make investments other than stocks look more attractive.
  • Markets react to government policy changes in different ways. Tax rules, government spending and new regulations can all matter.
  • Indian markets are connected to what happens overseas. A sudden move in the US or another major market can be felt here too.
  • What happens within a major sector, such as banking or technology, can also move the related index.

You cannot buy an index the way you buy shares of a company. Instead, there are several ways to get exposure to an index.

  • Index mutual funds: Your money goes into a mutual fund that follows a particular index. The fund holds the stocks that form part of that index.
  • Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs): An ETF is a fund whose units are traded on a stock exchange. These can be traded normally like shares through your trading account.
  • Index derivatives: Certain indices on NSE have derivative contracts like futures and options. Their value moves with the underlying index. So traders can use them to take a view on the market or hedge a position.

An index may look simple on the surface, but the product you choose to invest in still matters. Check the following before putting money into it:

  • Check how much the index tends to move.
  • Choose an investment that fits your time frame.
  • Look at the sectors included in the index.
  • Check the expense ratio of funds.
  • Make sure the product has sufficient liquidity.

NSE indices are benchmarks used to follow different parts of the stock market. Each index follows a set of rules for stock selection. Some indices cover a specific sector or theme. The broad-based ones, such as the Nifty 50, cover companies from across the market.

Investors cannot invest directly in an index. They can instead use index mutual funds, ETFs, futures or options to get exposure to an NSE index.

Several NSE indices have futures and options available for trading. Nifty 50 and Nifty Bank are among the widely traded ones in the derivatives market, subject to the contracts available on the exchange.

Yes, you can. NSE has futures contracts on eligible indices. You can trade these through a derivatives-enabled trading account.

Nifty 50, Nifty Next 50, Nifty 100, Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 are among the main broad-market NSE indices.

The number keeps changing as new indices are introduced and existing ones are discontinued. As of 31 July 2026, NSE Indices managed more than 436 indices.

The Nifty 50 gives a quick picture of how some of India's largest companies are performing. From there, sectoral and thematic indices can give you a closer look at areas such as banking, IT or defence. Comparing these indices over the same period can also show where the market has been stronger or weaker.

NSE Indices Limited is responsible for managing the Nifty indices. It is a subsidiary of the National Stock Exchange of India. It maintains the indices based on their respective rules.

Most indices go through a semi-annual review. However, it could be different for some indices. The review frequency is mentioned in the methodology of each index.

A Price Return index normally reflects changes in stock prices. A Total Return index goes a step further to give a true picture of returns. It includes dividends paid by the companies in the index.
