HDFC Bank Limited was incorporated in August 1994, with its registered office in Mumbai. It commenced operations as a Scheduled Commercial Bank in January 1995. HDFC Bank is listed on BSE (500180) and NSE (HDFCBANK), and its American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) are listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

HDFC Bank operates across three primary business verticals:

  • Retail Banking: serving individuals, salaried professionals, MSMEs, SHGs, and NRIs with savings accounts, loans (home, auto, personal, gold), credit/debit cards, wealth management, insurance distribution, and more.
  • Wholesale/Corporate Banking: offering working capital finance, trade services, cash management, and transaction banking to large corporates, PSUs, governments, and multinationals.
  • Treasury & Other Services: includes income from investments, forex operations, mutual fund and insurance services, and asset management.
  • 1994: Incorporated in August; received RBI in‑principle approval.
  • 1995: Commenced operations; first corporate office and branch opened at Worli, Mumbai.
  • 2000: Merged with Times Bank.
  • 2001: ADRs listed on NYSE.
  • 2008: Acquired Centurion Bank of Punjab, expanding reach significantly.
  • 2022–2023: Announced and completed merger with HDFC Limited (July 2023), India's largest-ever M&A in financial services. This significantly boosted the bank’s customer base, assets, and market cap.
  • 2025: HDB Financial Services (non-banking arm) made a strong IPO debut, valuing over $8 billion; reinforcing parent’s strength.
  • Runs a broad CSR initiative, Parivartan, focusing on rural empowerment, education, water structures, social startups, and livelihoods.
