Founded in 1919 by Dorabji Tata, Tata Power is headquartered at Bombay House, Mumbai, India. It is listed on both BSE (500400) and NSE (TATAPOWER) and publishes Global Depository Receipts on London and Luxembourg exchanges. As India's largest integrated power utility, it spans conventional and renewable electricity generation, transmission, distribution, natural gas services, and solar module manufacturing.

Tata Power’s operations span across multiple verticals. It generates power through both thermal and renewable sources, including hydro, wind, and solar, and distributes electricity via its wholly and jointly owned subsidiaries in Delhi and Odisha. The company also operates in power transmission, trading, storage solutions, and solar cells/module manufacturing. Its revenue streams include electricity sales, long-term PPAs, solar EPC services, module manufacturing, power trading, and distribution tariffs earned by discoms such as TPDDL and TPCODL. The integrated business model allows cross‑segment synergies and a diversified income base.

  • 1919: Promoted by Dorabji Tata; amalgamation into Tata Power Company Ltd.
  • 2000: Brought together Tata Hydroelectric, Andhra Valley Power, and Tata Power Co.
  • 1997-2000: Acquisition and expansion of the Jojobera coal-based power plant in Jharkhand with multiple unit additions.
  • 2011-2012: Commissioned Maithon Mega Power Project (1,050 MW, India’s first PPP venture).
  • 2012-2013: Mundra Ultra Mega Power Plant (4,000 MW coal-based) became operational in stages.
  • 2016: Acquired Welspun Renewables (India's largest renewable-sector deal at that time).
  • 2022: Commissioned 300 MW solar facility at Dholera; subsequently scaled to 400 MW.
  • 2023-2024: Completed 4.3 GW solar module and cell manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu, focusing on domestic demand; announced ₹1 trillion revenue and ₹100 billion profit targets by 2030.
  • 2023: Launched partnership with Indian Oil to install 500 EV charging points across India.
  • Core CSR focuses on education, women empowerment, biodiversity, and community development, including initiatives like “Act for Mahseer” and energy skilling.
  • Recognised as ESG Team of the Year (Power Gen ESG), received CSR Program of the Year (2023), and UNDP Mahatma Biodiversity Award.
