Tata Consumer Products Company background

Founded in: 1962
Managing director: Sunil DSouza

Tata Consumer Products Limited began as Tata Tea Limited in 1962, at a time when its business was closely tied to plantations and bulk tea production. For a long stretch, that remained the centre of gravity. The shift toward a broader consumer play happened in phases rather than all at once.

The first visible change came in 2010, when the company was renamed Tata Global Beverages. Even then, tea and coffee continued to dominate. The more structural pivot took place in February 2020, when the consumer products business of Tata Chemicals was folded into the company. That integration is what effectively shaped the current portfolio.

Now headquartered in Mumbai and part of the Tata Group, the company operates under Managing Director Sunil D'Souza. It is listed on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE: TATACONSUM) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE: 500800).

Its presence today spans packaged beverages as well as everyday food categories such as salt and pulses. India accounts for the largest share of business, although international markets, particularly North America and parts of Europe, continue to contribute through established brands.

Tea still anchors the portfolio, but it no longer defines it in the way it once did. Over the last few years, the company has been building out adjacent categories, some faster than others. Packaged foods, for instance, have become more visible, even if they are still scaling.

Growth has also come through partnerships. The joint venture with Starbucks Corporation brought the café format into the mix in India, while the arrangement with PepsiCo under NourishCo focused on non-carbonated beverages. These aren’t the largest contributors individually, but they do expand the overall consumption play.

The revenue mix reflects this gradual shift. Branded sales in India form the base. International business adds continuity, especially in tea. Other formats. like cafés, remain smaller but strategically relevant. At the same time, plantation-linked operations have become less central to how the business is positioned going forward.
