Founded in: 1965

Vedanta Limited, incorporated in 1979, is headed by founder and non-executive Chairman Anil Agarwal. Its registered and corporate offices are in Mumbai, India. It’s publicly listed on both the NSE (VEDL) and BSE (500295). The company operates in mining and natural resources, with core activities across aluminium, zinc-lead-silver, copper, iron ore, oil & gas, power, and steel.

Vedanta earns revenue through diverse business verticals:

  • Aluminium, Zinc India, Oil & Gas, Copper, Zinc International, Iron Ore, Power, and Others contribute to its topline.
  • Its largest revenue generator is Aluminium (₹52,662 crore), followed by Zinc India (₹33,120 crore), Oil & Gas (₹15,038 crore) and Copper (₹17,491 crore).
  • Vedanta operates through fully or majority-owned subsidiaries like BALCO, Hindustan Zinc, Sterlite Copper, and others – each handling specific segments and generating earnings via mining, smelting, refining, and energy provision.
  • 1979: Vedanta Limited formed (predecessors Sesa Goa/Sterlite).
  • 2001: Acquired 51% stake in BALCO.
  • 2002: Acquired 26% interest in Hindustan Zinc.
