HAL Company background

Founded in: 1963
Managing director: D K Sunil

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, originally formed as Hindustan Aircraft in December 1940 by Walchand Hirachand alongside the Government of Mysore, was later merged into HAL in 1964. Today, it’s a government-owned public sector aerospace and defence company headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka. HAL is listed on both BSE (541154) and NSE (HAL). Its core competency spans design, development, manufacture, repair, overhaul and upgrade of aircraft, helicopters, aero-engines, avionics, aerospace structures, and accessories.

HAL’s business is broadly split across manufacturing and services. Manufacturing includes fighter, transport, trainer aircraft, helicopters, and aeroengines. Key platforms include Tejas LCA, Hawk, SU-30 MKI, IJT, Dornier, HTT-40, RUAVs, and related avionics & aerospace systems. Services mainly involve maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO). The company also has MRO operations for civilian aircraft—HAL’s Nashik facility has started overhauling Airbus A320s and Embraer jets. Recently, HAL won a ₹5.11 billion contract to manufacture ISRO’s Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) commercially, marking its entry into the space launch domain.

  • 1940: Incorporated as Hindustan Aircraft in Bengaluru, founded by Walchand Hirachand and Mysore Government.
  • 1951: Ministry of Defence took administrative control.
  • 1964: Amalgamated with Aeronautics India Ltd to become HAL.
  • 2024: Tejas Mk1A first deliveries prepared; multiple production lines set up in Bengaluru and Nashik to boost aircraft output.
  • Aug 2024: HAL’s MRO business made up 72% of FY2023-24 revenue, highlighting the dominance of maintenance services.
  • Q3 FY2025 (ended Dec 2024): Secured ₹135 billion order for 12 Sukhoi jets and declared ₹25/share dividend.
  • Early 2025: HAL’s Nashik MRO facility began civilian aircraft overhaul – first A320 Neo for IndiGo in March, followed by Embraer E-175 & E-145.
  • June 2025: Awarded ₹5.11 billion SSLV manufacturing contract, enabling HAL to enter commercial space launch arena.
  • HAL expanded civilian MRO, easing import dependence and boosting technical capability and jobs.
  • Its SSLV venture supports India’s push toward private-sector space participation.
  • The company’s Maharatna status grants greater financial autonomy for strategic investments, including R&D and infrastructure.
  • Elevated to Maharatna status in October 2024, giving HAL enhanced decision-making and investment flexibility.
