HAL Company background

Founded in: 1963

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, originally formed as Hindustan Aircraft in December 1940 by Walchand Hirachand alongside the Government of Mysore, was later merged into HAL in 1964. Today, it’s a government-owned public sector aerospace and defence company headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka. HAL is listed on both BSE (541154) and NSE (HAL). Its core competency spans design, development, manufacture, repair, overhaul and upgrade of aircraft, helicopters, aero-engines, avionics, aerospace structures, and accessories.

HAL’s business is broadly split across manufacturing and services. Manufacturing includes fighter, transport, trainer aircraft, helicopters, and aeroengines. Key platforms include Tejas LCA, Hawk, SU-30 MKI, IJT, Dornier, HTT-40, RUAVs, and related avionics & aerospace systems. Services mainly involve maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO). The company also has MRO operations for civilian aircraft—HAL’s Nashik facility has started overhauling Airbus A320s and Embraer jets. Recently, HAL won a ₹5.11 billion contract to manufacture ISRO’s Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) commercially, marking its entry into the space launch domain.
