TCS Company background

Founded in: 1995
Managing director: K. Krithivasan.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is part of the Tata Group and is commonly regarded as one of India’s largest IT services firms. The business dates back to 1968 and continues to be based in Mumbai. K. Krithivasan heads the company as CEO, with N. Chandrasekaran in the role of Chairman.

Its scale shows up quickly in the numbers. The employee base has crossed 6,00,000, and its client network extends across 46 countries. On the markets side, TCS is listed on both major Indian exchanges, traded as TCS on the NSE: TCS and under BOM: 532540 on the BSE. The stock tends to remain under close watch, not so much for short-term movement as for its long-standing record of steady performance. A large part of its revenue is tied to multi-year contracts, and a major share continues to come from repeat business.

At a broad level, TCS functions as an end-to-end technology services provider. Its portfolio spans cloud computing, cybersecurity, consulting, artificial intelligence, IoT, and digital platforms. A key factor in its scale has been the global delivery model, supported by domain expertise, which enables participation in large and often complex transformation programmes.

Revenue is primarily generated through IT services, consulting, and business process outsourcing. In execution, however, these segments are not always distinct, as large engagements typically involve a combination of services delivered together.

The company’s capabilities include application development, system integration, infrastructure management, engineering services, and advisory. Its Business Process Services (TCS BPS) division focuses on managing and optimising business operations for clients at scale.

Client relationships generally extend over longer periods rather than remaining transactional. Engagements don’t always remain limited to their original scope. Many engagements start with a clearly defined requirement and then expand over time as business needs evolve, often moving into related service areas. This tends to push up contract values, while also helping sustain ongoing client relationships.

Revenue remains concentrated in North America and Europe. India and other emerging markets contribute a smaller share; that said, their contribution has been inching up over time.
