Titan Company Company background

Founded in: 1984
Managing director: C K Venkataraman

Titan Company Limited was incorporated in 1984 through a joint venture between the Tata Group and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO). The starting point was the watch business, with manufacturing set up in Hosur not long after. This business remained in focus for a while.

The portfolio began to widen in the mid-1990s with the entry into jewellery. That decision, in hindsight, changed the trajectory of the company more than any other move. Later additions consisting of eyewear, fragrances, and wearables came in phases and at different scales.

Today, the company is headquartered in Mumbai and is led by Managing Director Ajoy Chawla. India accounts for most of the business. There is some international presence, but it is not a defining part of the model.

It is listed on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE: TITAN) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE: 500114).

Jewellery now contributes towards the largest share of revenue. Tanishq sits at the centre of this segment, with additional brands like Mia and Zoya addressing different price points and customer profiles. Growth here has been relatively steady, supported by store expansion and brand positioning.

The watches segment still exists alongside this, though its relative importance has reduced. Fastrack and Sonata operate in the value and youth segments. Titan-branded watches sit more in the mid-range, while Xylys targets the luxury category. The segmentation is clear, even if the category itself is not growing at the same pace as jewellery.

Eyewear, under Titan Eye+, is a smaller but stable business. Fragrances (SKINN) and wearables remain in earlier stages of scale. They are present, but not central.

Revenue is largely domestic and retail-led. Distribution, physical stores in particular, continues to play a key role. Online channels have expanded, but they complement rather than replace the core model.
