EMA + ADX Trend Strength Swing Strategy

Many experienced swing traders use multiple strategies depending on market conditions. In this chapter, we look at another commonly used approach: the EMA + ADX Trend Strength Strategy.

Before we go further, a quick introduction to ADX. The Average Directional Index (ADX) measures trend strength — not direction, but how strongly the market is trending in any direction. ADX displays as a single line from 0 to 100. Below 20 means range-bound or weakening trending. Above 20 and rising means a genuine trend is developing. Above 40 indicates a very strong trend.

ADX does not tell you whether to buy or sell — it tells you whether there is enough directional energy to make a trending trade worthwhile.

Example: A stock breaks above a five-week consolidation range. The 50 EMA is below price and pointing upward. Every technical condition appears correct. But ADX is at 14 and flat. 2 sessions later, the breakout has reversed and price is back inside the range.

Not all breakouts above the 50 EMA are equal. A breakout that occurs when ADX is flat or below 20 reflects a market with insufficient directional energy. The move is more likely to fail.

The ADX does not tell you direction. It tells you strength. A rising ADX above 20 on a breakout means the move has conviction.

The following example uses entry price Rs. 500 and account capital Rs. 5,00,000.

An ADX below 20 indicates a trendless or weakly trending market. Breakouts in this context frequently fail. The ADX confirmation is not optional.

ADX can peak and turn down during normal consolidations within a strong trend. Wait for ADX to decline alongside an actual structural break before exiting.

  • The 50 EMA provides directional bias and ADX (14) provides trend strength confirmation. Both must be positive before entry.
  • ADX above 20 and rising at the time of the breakout is the quality filter. ADX below 20 means skip or wait.
  • Exit when ADX peaks and turns down alongside a structural break in price. ADX deceleration alone is a signal to tighten, not to exit.

Add ADX (14) to the Nifty 50 daily chart. Go back 3 months. Find every time the Nifty broke above a prior resistance level.

For each breakout, check what ADX was reading on that day — was it above 20 and rising? Did breakouts with ADX above 20 perform better than those without? Record your findings.

In the next chapter, we look at using RSI in an unconventional way — not to find oversold conditions, but to confirm that a breakout has genuine momentum behind it.
