Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd is a Schedule 'A', Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) incorporated on 23rd October 1989 under the Companies Act, 1956. Headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana, the company operates under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, and is India's largest electric power transmission utility, transmitting approximately 50% of the total power generated in the country on its network.

Listed on both the NSE (NSE: POWERGRID) and BSE (BOM: 532898), the company holds a 51.34% equity stake with the Government of India. It plays a central role in establishing and operating regional and national power grids to facilitate the transfer of bulk power across states with reliability, security, and economy.

Power Grid Corporation of India has primarily three business verticals, including:

  • Power Transmission: The company is a leader in the Indian power transmission sector. As India's Central Transmission Utility (CTU), POWERGRID plans, builds, owns, operates and maintains the interstate and interregional extra-high voltage AC (EHVAC) and High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission networks. It takes continuous action for the maintenance and operation of its transmission assets.

  • Consultancy: Banking on its capacity and experience in power transmission and distribution management, the company also provides consultancy services to clients across India and in over 25 countries globally.

  • Telecom: The company is also in the telecom business through its subsidiary POWERGRID Teleservices Ltd with brand name PowerTel. It is the only telecom service provider in India to offer bandwidth leasing using Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) on power transmission with a PAN-India overhead optic fibre network.

  • 1989: Set up as National Power Transmission Corporation of India (NPTC)
  • 1990: Received certificate of commencement and commissions a ±500kV Rihand-Dadri high-voltage direct current (HVDC) bi-pole link
  • 1992: Changed name to Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd.
  • 1994: Signed first memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Power
  • 1998: Achieved Mini Ratna Category I status
  • 2000: Commissioned the first optic fibre link between Chandigarh and Delhi under the Northern Region Unified Load Despatch & Communication project
  • 2001: Diversified into the telecom business.
  • 2003: Got their first international consultancy contract from Bhutan Telecommunications
  • 2009: Established Power System Operation Corporation Ltd (POSOCO), a wholly-owned subsidiary
  • 2010: Launched first follow-on public offer (FPO) of equity shares
  • 2013: Launched second FPO of equity shares
  • 2015: Completed the world's largest multi-terminal ±800kV HVDC Project in Agra
  • 2018: Set up their first public EV-fast charging station in Hyderabad
  • 2025: Secured their first battery energy storage system (BESS) project
  • Investment in renewable power assets to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
  • Aims to become a net water-positive organisation by 2030.
  • Seeks to achieve the status of zero waste to landfill by 2030.
  • Replacement of diesel vehicles with electric vehicles for official purposes.
  • Bagged the Business World People L&D Excellence Award 2026 in the category of Best Use of AI in Learning.
  • Won the ATD Best Awards 2024 for a strategic approach to talent development driving business results.
  • Conferred the Global Gold Award by The Green Organisation in 2023.
