Canara Bank Company background
Canara Bank is one of the leading Public Sector Banks of India, with an experience of more than one century. It began its journey as Canara Hindu Permanent Fund Limited at Mangalore in July 1906 by Shri Ammembal Subba Rao Pai. In 1910 it became a limited company and, in 1969, following its nationalisation, took its present name. As of March 2025, Canara Bank has over 11.76 crore customers across its 9,849 branches and 11,144 ATMs/recyclers spread across all states and union territories of India. The bank is based in Bengaluru and is a large financial conglomerate with a presence across India and select international markets.
Canara Bank is traded on the National Stock Exchange (NSE: CANBK) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BOM: 532483).
Business Segments and Revenue Model
Canara Bank generates revenue from various financial services. The primary source of revenue is interest income from loans given to retail, agricultural and corporate clients. The bank also earns substantial fee-based income by way of processing charges, commission on third-party products like insurance, treasury operations, etc.
The bank has diversified its operations through its subsidiaries and sponsored entities. These units have specialised functions such as asset management, venture capital and housing finance. By end March 2025, the bank had thirteen such subsidiaries and sponsored institutions, which extended its scope beyond traditional commercial banking.

- 1906: Canara Hindu Permanent Fund was established by Shri Ammembal Subba Rao Pai in Mangalore.
- 1969: The bank was nationalised, broadening its public service mandate and accelerating branch expansion across the country.
- 1983: First overseas branch opened at London, marking the bank’s entry into international banking.
- 2020: Acquisition of Syndicate Bank, huge customer base and branch network expansion.
- 2022: Launched 'Canara ai1' mobile application, a holistic digital banking platform to ease banking for customers.
- 2024: Raised ₹4,000 crore via Basel III-compliant Tier II bonds.

- Renewable Energy Financing: By end March 2025, the bank’s exposure to renewable energy segments such as solar and wind power exceeded ₹20,000 crore.
- Digital Transformation: The bank’s “Green Warrior” campaign encouraged the use of Electronic Bank Guarantees (e-BGs). This has resulted in a significant reduction in paper used in all its commercial activities.
- Social Impact: The bank has 27 Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETIs) under its Rural Development Trust. These institutes have trained over 3 lakh unemployed youth in vocational skills with a placement rate frequently above 70%.
- Operational Footprint: The bank has installed solar rooftop panels at its major administrative offices with a view to sourcing at least 15% of its energy needs from captive renewable sources.
