Founded in: 1975

NHPC Limited was incorporated on November 7, 1975, by the Government of India to plan, develop, and operate hydropower projects. The registered office is at NHPC Office Complex, Sector-33, Faridabad, Haryana. NHPC is listed on NSE (NHPC) and BSE (533098) since September 1, 2009. Its core business is hydroelectric generation, with extensions into solar and wind, plus power trading and consultancy services.

NHPC Business Segments and Revenue Model

NHPC’s operating verticals are:

  • Hydropower Generation: Own and JV stations selling power to state discoms under long-term PPAs; revenue comprises capacity and energy charges
  • Renewables: Utility-scale solar and wind through NHPC and subsidiaries
  • Consultancy: Feasibility, design, construction management, R&M, and life-extension services for hydro assets
  • Power Trading: Portfolio balancing and optimisation.

Earnings primarily arise from regulated tariff recovery on commissioned plants, sale of renewable energy, consultancy fees, and trading margins, creating a largely annuity-like cash flow base.

NHPC Key Milestones

  • 1975: Incorporated as National Hydroelectric Power Corporation under Government of India.
  • 1980-81: First project, Baira Siul (180 MW), commissioned. R&M later extended life by 25 years (all units back in commercial operation by Aug 31, 2021).
  • 1983: Loktak (105 MW) commissioned in Manipur.
  • 1987-1995: Salal units commissioned across phases; project transferred to NHPC ownership.
  • 1994: Chamera-I (540 MW) commissioned in Himachal Pradesh.
  • 1997: Uri-I (480 MW) commissioned in Jammu & Kashmir.
  • May 19, 2018: Kishanganga (330 MW) inaugurated/commissioned, adding high-head capacity in Jammu & Kashmir.
  • September 1, 2009: Shares listed on NSE and BSE post IPO.
  • August 30, 2024: Granted Navratna status, enhancing operational and financial autonomy.
  • August 2025: Subansiri Lower (2,000 MW) milestone: installation of a 395-tonne generator stator for Unit-5, paving way for phased commissioning.

  • Publishes GRI-aligned Sustainability/BRSR disclosures; programmes span environment, education, health, sanitation, rural and skill development, and women empowerment.
  • CSR MoU with Varanasi Development Authority to build a Net-Zero Library, an eco-friendly, solar-enabled public facility.
