Biocon Company background

Founded in: 1978
Managing director: Shreehas Pradeep Tambe

Biocon Limited started in Bengaluru back in 1978 as a joint venture between an Irish company, Biocon Biochemicals Limited, and Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw. At first, they were mainly exporting enzymes to the US and Europe. It didn’t take long for them to branch out and soon they moved into biologics, insulin products, and contract research. Now, Biocon isn’t just a local player. It began operations by exporting enzymes to the US and Europe and later expanded into biologics, insulin products, and contract research services. Over the years, Biocon has built a global presence across the US, Europe, Latin America, and emerging markets.

The company is listed on both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BOM: 532523) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE: BIOCON).

Biocon operates through a diversified biopharmaceutical model spanning biosimilars, generic formulations, APIs, and contract research services. The biosimilars business remains the company’s major growth driver, supported by products in oncology, diabetes, and immunology across advanced and emerging markets.

The company’s generic formulations segment focuses on developing a portfolio of complex generic formulations. Biocon also generates revenue from its API business through fermentation-based and synthetic active pharmaceutical ingredients used in chronic therapies.

Its research services arm, Syngene International, provides research, development and manufacturing services to global pharmaceutical and biotech companies through long-term contracts and dedicated research centres. Biocon’s overall revenue model is driven by product sales, licensing income, strategic partnerships, and contract research revenues.
