Cochin Shipyard Company background

Founded in: 1972

Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) was incorporated on March 29, 1972, by the Government of India. It is a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. It is listed on both the National Stock Exchange (COCHINSHIP) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (540678). CSL is the largest shipbuilding and repair facility in India, engaged in shipbuilding, ship repair, marine training, defence contracts and maritime/offshore structures.

CSL’s revenue comes primarily from shipbuilding and ship repair & refit segments. In shipbuilding it constructs commercial vessels (bulk carriers, tankers, supply/offshore vessels, Ro-Ro/Passenger, defense ships like fast patrol vessels and indigenous aircraft carriers) both for domestic clients such as the Indian Navy, ONGC, and Coast Guard, as well as international customers. In ship repair, it services large vessels up to ~125,000 DWT, including aircraft carriers, rigs, oil exploration vessels, scheduled maintenance and life-extension work. It also has a training vertical — the Marine Engineering Training Institute (METI) — which produces marine engineering graduates. CSR and other non-core support such as infrastructure and dry dock expansion complement revenue. The company also earns via export orders and through specialized facilities like the International Ship Repair Facility (ISRF).
