Smart Alerts: Crossovers, Breakouts, and Custom Conditions

Setting a basic price alert is useful, but TradingView lets you do a lot more. You can create smart alerts that notify you based on specific market events like:

  • Moving average crossovers
  • Breakouts from support/resistance
  • Custom indicator-based conditions

These alerts are more powerful because they focus on signals, not just price.

A crossover is when two lines cross each other, usually used with indicators like moving averages or MACD.

Example:

You use:

  • 9 EMA (fast-moving average)
  • 21 EMA (slow-moving average)

You want to be alerted when 9 EMA crosses above 21 EMA. This could signal a buy opportunity.

How to Set It:

  1. Add both EMAs to your chart
  2. Click the “Alerts” (Alarm Clock) icon
  3. Click “Create Alert”
  4. Under “Condition”:

o Select ‘9 EMA crossing 21 EMA’ 5. Set your preferred actions (popup, app, etc.) 6. Click Create

Now TradingView will notify you only when a crossover happens, not just when price hits a level.

Let’s say Infosys has been stuck between ₹1,400 and ₹1,500. You want to get notified if it breaks out above ₹1,500.

How to Set It:

  1. Draw a horizontal line at ₹1,500 using the drawing tools
  2. Right-click on the line → Select “Add Alert on Horizontal Line
  3. Choose "Crossing Up"
  4. Click Create

This is helpful for:

  • Breakouts from consolidation
  • Support/resistance zones
  • Price channels

You can set alerts on:

  • Indicator + price combinations
  • Custom strategies coded in Pine Scripts

Example:

“Alert me when RSI < 30 and price is above 50 EMA”

This needs either:

  • TradingView Premium (for multi-condition alerts)
  • Or a custom Pine Scripts™ to define the logic

Once the script is added to the chart:

  • Right-click the script → Select “Add Alert on Strategy”
  • Choose your custom trigger → Create alert
  • Trade less emotionally: Let the signal come to you
  • Act faster: Be the first to catch breakouts or reversals
  • Save time: No need to constantly monitor charts

Smart alerts = smarter trading decisions, made with logic instead of guesswork.
