Long-Term Investors: Watchlists, Notes & Macro Indicators
If you're a long-term investor, you don’t need to track charts minute by minute.
Instead, your edge comes from:
- Understanding the big picture
- Tracking quality businesses
- Watching macro signals that shape market cycles
TradingView isn’t just for short-term traders, it can be a powerful tool for long-term investors too.
Step 1: Create a Thematic Watchlist
Organize stocks based on sectors, themes, or strategies.
Core Portfolio | Stocks you already own |
Potential Buys | Companies on your radar |
High Dividend Picks | Yield-focused large caps |
Global Macro | Indices, commodities, FX pairs |
Sector Themes | IT, Banking, FMCG, Infra, etc. |
To create a watchlist:
- Open the Watchlist panel (right sidebar)
- Click the 3-dot menu → Create New List
- Add stocks, ETFs, or indices based on your goals
Step 2: Use Notes to Track Research
Each stock or index in your watchlist allows personal notes.
Use it to log:
- Entry rationale
- Target allocation
- Key risks or news
- Valuation checkpoints
- Rebalancing plans
To add a note:
- Hover over a stock → Click the “note” icon → Add comments
This becomes your mini research journal, attached to each stock.
Step 3: Add Macro & Global Market Indicators
Long-term investors often ignore charts, but they shouldn’t ignore macro trends.
Use TradingView to track:
- US 10Y bond yield (US10Y)
- Crude Oil Futures (USOIL)
- INR vs USD (USDINR)
- Gold (XAUUSD)
- VIX (Volatility Index) (INDIAVIX or VIX)
- Global Indices (e.g., S&P 500, Nikkei, DAX)
Create a layout with 3–4 macro charts and save it as “Macro Dashboard” for monthly review.
Suggested Indicators for Long-Term Context
200 EMA (Weekly) | Tracks long-term trend of index or stock |
MACD (Slow setting) | Identifies big trend shifts |
On-Balance Volume | Confirms accumulation in steady movers |
Relative Rotation Graph (RRG) | Sector momentum and rotation |
Set the chart to weekly or monthly to avoid noise.
Monthly Review Routine (Sample)
First weekend | Review watchlist notes |
Once/month | Check macro dashboards |
Quarterly | Add new fundamental triggers (dividend hikes, earnings) |
Rebalance | Based on allocations, valuations, or conviction shifts |
To Sum Up
Long-term investing isn't just about buying and waiting.
It’s about staying informed, tracking your thinking, and adjusting with clarity.
With watchlists, notes, and macro dashboards, TradingView becomes a powerful companion - not for chasing moves, but for making better decisions over time.
