As part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission of the Government of India, NTPC Renewable Energy Limited has signed a contract with SECI to supply 70,000 MTPA green ammonia.
NTPC Renewable Energy Limited is a wholly owned unit of NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL). On 31 March 2026, the company announced that it would supply 70,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia to Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).
On 30 March 2026, just before the announcement, NTPC Green Energy’s share slipped nearly 3%, ending the day at ₹92.32 on the NSE. It will be interesting to see how the market responds to this news when it opens on 1 April 2026.
How Is The Deal Structured?
NTPC Renewable Energy will supply 70,000 MTPA of green ammonia to Krishna Phoschem. It will be used primarily in the fertiliser sector, and SECI will be the intermediary buyer. This Green Ammonia Purchase Agreement (GAPA) has been signed within the guidelines of the SIGHT scheme of the National Green Hydrogen Mission of the Government of India, which has set a target of producing 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030 and reducing fossil fuel imports.
The step is expected to support the gradual replacement of conventional ammonia, which is produced using fossil fuels.
What Is Green Ammonia And Why Does It Matter?
Green ammonia is an important component in India’s energy transition strategy, especially for sectors such as fertilisers. It is produced using green hydrogen, which is generated through renewable energy sources like solar or wind power.
India still depends heavily on fertiliser imports, so producing green ammonia locally could make a real difference both environmentally and economically.

The Larger Goal Of NTPC
NTPC has been exploring the green hydrogen space for some time now. Back in 2023, it became one of the first companies to launch India’s first green hydrogen blending project, in partnership with Gujarat Gas Ltd in Surat.
At the centre of this plan is the Pudimadaka–Visakhapatnam Green Hydrogen Hub, which is NTPC’s flagship project in this space. The facility is expected to produce around 2.5 million tonnes per year of green chemicals, including green ammonia, methanol, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and green urea.
