As per a study by UC Berkley Researchers, the use of AI in workplaces can lead to burnout and lower quality work. The study suggested that companies rethink how they measure productivity, and employees must take intentional breaks.

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are meant to save time. Many companies say they boost productivity. But a new study published in the Harvard Business Review suggests the story may not be that simple.

This research, conducted by UC Berkley Researchers, found that workers who rely heavily on AI often end up taking on more work. The speed gains do not reduce pressure. In many cases, they increase it.

The study observed 200 employees in a US-based tech company using AI tools in daily tasks. People completed assignments faster than before. Managers noticed the quicker turnaround. Expectations then went up. What once took a day was now expected in hours.

"The productivity surge enjoyed at the beginning can give way to lower quality work, turnover, and other problems," the study report mentioned.

When workers finished tasks quickly, they were given additional responsibilities. The workload quietly expanded. Instead of freeing up time, AI use filled it.

Many participants said they struggled to disconnect after work. Since tasks could be done quickly, more of them kept arriving. The line between work hours and personal time began to blur.

Over time, this pattern led to stress. Some workers reported feeling mentally drained. The pressure to maintain high speed became constant.

The study noted that burnout affected decision-making. When people felt exhausted, the quality of their work suffered.

Some employees also had to double-check AI-generated outputs. Reviewing and correcting these outputs added another layer of effort. That review process often went unnoticed.

Rushing through assignments to meet tighter deadlines reduced careful thinking. Workers admitted they sometimes focused more on finishing quickly than on doing their best work.

AI tools can raise performance benchmarks. Once teams see faster results, the new pace becomes standard.

Instead of replacing work, AI often reshapes it. Workers shift from doing tasks manually to supervising and correcting automated outputs. That supervision requires attention and mental energy.

The study also pointed to emotional strain. Some workers felt pressure to prove they were still valuable in an AI-driven setup. This added to anxiety and fatigue.

"Many workers noted that they were doing more at once - and feeling more pressure - than before they used AI, even though the time savings from automation had ostensibly been meant to reduce such pressure," the study report mentioned.

Researchers suggested simple steps. Companies may need to rethink how they measure productivity. Faster output should not automatically mean more assignments.

Clear limits on workload and proper breaks can help. So can open discussions about expectations.

AI can be useful. But without careful management, it may push workers harder instead of helping them.

The study sends a clear message. Technology alone cannot improve workplace well-being. How it is used matters just as much.
