NTPC Company background
NTPC Limited (formerly National Thermal Power Corporation) is a Central Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Power, Government of India. It was incorporated on November 7, 1975. Headquartered in New Delhi, it is listed on both the National Stock Exchange (NTPC) and Bombay Stock Exchange (532555). NTPC is India’s largest integrated power company, engaged in electricity generation, development of fuel sources (coal, gas), renewable energy, and consultancy and turnkey project services.
NTPC Business Segments and Revenue Model
NTPC earns its revenue primarily from bulk power generation and sale to state utilities and other bulk customers. Its core generation mix includes coal-based thermal power plants, gas / liquid fuel plants, hydro, solar, and wind. It also has business verticals for fuel sourcing (coal mining), consultancy, project management, power trading, and other services related to energy. Over time, NTPC is increasing its renewable energy portion and aiming for a diversified fuel mix. Revenue flows from sale of electricity, ancillary services, trading, and fees from non-generation segments.

- 1980s-1990s: Rapid expansion of thermal power capacity; acquired and commissioned multiple large thermal power stations.
- 1997: Conferred “Navratna” status by GOI.
- 2004: NTPC shares listed on NSE & BSE.
- 2005: Renamed from National Thermal Power Corporation Limited to NTPC Limited to reflect its diversified energy portfolio.
- 2010s-2020s: Started expanding in hydro, renewables, and acquiring coal mines for backward integration.
- Recent (2024-2025): Planning large investments in renewable energy and storage, including pumped hydro; setting more ambitious targets for non-fossil fuel capacity; launching sustainability and water-resilience initiatives.
