NHPC Limited was incorporated on November 7, 1975, by the Government of India to plan, develop, and operate hydropower projects. • 1975: Incorporated as National Hydroelectric Power Corporation under Government of India.
• 1980-81: First project, Baira Siul (180 MW), commissioned. R&M later extended life by 25 years (all units back in commercial operation by Aug 31, 2021).
• 1983: Loktak (105 MW) commissioned in Manipur.
• 1987-1995: Salal units commissioned across phases; project transferred to NHPC ownership.
• 1994: Chamera-I (540 MW) commissioned in Himachal Pradesh.
