History of Hero Group
The Hero story began in 1956 when the Munjal brothers began Hero Cycles at Ludhiana. The group expanded with bicycle parts, exports, and motorcycles and established a robust manufacturing foundation and supplier base. In 1984, the group made a significant breakthrough by setting up a joint venture with Honda to establish Hero Honda, which rose to become a market leader during the 1990s and 2000s.
In December 2010, the partners agreed to part ways. The Indian business continued under the new name Hero MotoCorp from 2011 and pushed into global markets while expanding its supplier base and R&D. Over time, the wider group added new pillars: renewable energy through Hero Future Energies, consumer and enterprise lending at Hero FinCorp, and skill development via Hero Vired. These steps kept the group relevant across economic cycles and consumer needs.
Hero Group’s Sector Presence
The company currently serves the following sectors:
- Two-wheelers: Hero MotoCorp designs and manufactures motorcycles and scooters for India and export markets. Its leadership messaging describes it as the world’s No. 1 two-wheeler manufacturer by volumes, backed by a deep dealer and service network. The company also invests in emerging mobility and EV platforms.

- Auto components and engineering: Rockman Industries and other group suppliers manufacture die-castings, alloy wheels, chains, and composites for Indian and global OEMs, supporting quality and scale across mobility.
