Tata Motors Opens Ranipet Facility As First Range Rover Evoque Rolls Out

Tata-Motors-Opens-Ranipet-Facility

Tata Motors Passenger Cars and Jaguar Land Rover began operations at the ₹9000 crore Ranipet plant on 9 February 2026, with capacity planned at 2,50,000-3,00,000 vehicles annually.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd and Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Plc have formally commissioned their new manufacturing facility at Panapakkam in Tamil Nadu’s Ranipet district, marking the first operational phase of a greenfield project aimed at next-generation mobility.

The plant was commissioned following the State government’s continued efforts to attract large-scale automotive investments, with Ranipet joining the established hubs in Sriperumbudur and Oragadam. The plant will be used to serve local consumption and the global market to increase the Tata Group's production base and improve the presence of the State in the Indian automotive value chain.

  • The Panapakkam plant has been designed as a green field location to facilitate the manufacture of next-generation cars on several platforms, including electric cars to serve both Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Jaguar Land Rover.

  • The facility consolidates the Tata Group's supply chain and minimises reliance on foreign assembly for specific high-end models, as it supports both domestic and export programmes.

  • The facility has a designed annual capacity of 250,000-3,00,000 units once fully ramped up, indicating headroom for multi-model production across different price segments.

  • The ramp-up horizon of five to seven years implies a measured capacity-addition plan, enabling the company to match plant utilisation with demand conditions in both domestic and foreign markets rather than preloading fixed costs.

  • The plant is expected to create sustainable employment of over 5,000 jobs in manufacturing, logistics, and the vendor ecosystem that can boost the industrial base in Ranipet and the surrounding districts.

  • Workforce development at the facility is being supported through structured skilling programmes that combine shopfloor training with higher-education pathways, creating a pipeline of technically trained personnel for advanced manufacturing roles.

  • The Ranipet plant has been built to run solely on renewable energy and to be water positive, with sustainability statistics built into the core manufacturing processes rather than being nominal add-ons.

The Ranipet project's launch represents an ongoing capital commitment for Tata Motors' passenger vehicle and JLR businesses, enabling potential medium-term volume growth and increased local content in vehicles produced in India, if utilisation levels ramp up as planned. However, this project also increases Tata's execution risk and the capital required to fund it, especially at this point in time, when returns will ultimately depend on how quickly premium vehicles ramp up and whether export volumes materialise as expected.
