India’s largest airline, IndiGo, is pressing ahead with aggressive expansion plans, with its leadership making it clear that growth, not disruption, will define the coming decade. The carrier wants to scale up international flying sharply, add aircraft almost every week, and cross major passenger milestones by 2030.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Wings India 2026 aviation summit in Hyderabad, IndiGo Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers outlined how the airline plans to transform itself from a domestic powerhouse into a global aviation player.
What Is IndiGo Targeting by 2030?
IndiGo has set some ambitious goals for the end of the decade. The airline is aiming to operate more than 4,000 daily flights, including domestic services, by 2030. At present, it runs over 2,200 flights every day.
Passenger numbers are also expected to rise sharply. IndiGo wants to carry around 200 million passengers annually by 2030, up from 124 million passengers flown in 2025. Alongside this, the airline plans to operate more than 4,000 routes across India and overseas markets.
By 2030, IndiGo is targeting nearly 40% of total capacity to come from overseas operations, a significant jump from current levels.
How Fast Is the Airline Expanding Its Fleet?
Fleet growth is at the centre of IndiGo’s expansion strategy. The airline currently operates around 440 aircraft and plans to add one aircraft every week for the next decade.
In 2025, IndiGo received 55 aircraft, and a similar number is expected to join the fleet in 2026, depending on delivery schedules. Overall, nearly 900 aircraft are on order, including 39 Airbus A321XLR planes. Nine of these long-range aircraft are expected to be delivered in the calendar year 2026.
These additions will allow the airline to increase frequencies, open new routes, and support longer international flights without compromising its high-utilisation domestic network.
Why Is International Expansion Such a Big Focus Now?
Elbers said IndiGo sees strong demand building up for international travel from India. Rising incomes, improving connectivity, and growing economic activity are pushing more Indians to fly abroad.
Air travel penetration in India has increased from about 2% in 2006 to around 7–8% today, but this remains well below the global average. IndiGo believes this figure could rise to nearly 15% in the coming years.
The airline is also betting on global developments to support demand. Elbers pointed to the proposed India-EU trade agreement as one factor that could increase business travel and international connectivity.
To support long-haul ambitions, IndiGo is also preparing for the early induction of wide-body aircraft from 2026. Leased Boeing wide-bodies are already being used for cargo operations and are performing well, according to the airline.
Can Recent Disruptions Slow Down These Plans?
Elbers acknowledged the operational disruptions IndiGo faced in December last year, which were triggered by pilot-related issues and impacted thousands of passengers. However, he stressed that the episode does not change the airline’s long-term direction.
Operations were stabilised within days, and by Christmas, IndiGo was carrying close to 3.9 lakh passengers in a single day. The airline believes this quick recovery reflects the strength of its network and systems.
“We cannot let three days define what we have built over 20 years,” Elbers said, adding that the airline has taken lessons from the disruption to build a more resilient operation.
Despite the setback, IndiGo says its growth plans remain firmly on track, with expansion across routes, aircraft, and international markets continuing at full speed.
With weekly aircraft additions, a sharp push into overseas flying, and a clear passenger growth target, IndiGo is positioning itself to become one of the world’s largest airlines by the end of the decade.
