Garden Reach Shipbuilders has signed an MoU with Bharat Forge’s arm, Kalyani Strategic Systems, to explore defence and maritime technologies and support indigenous naval systems.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd. (KSSL), the defence subsidiary of Bharat Forge Ltd., to jointly explore opportunities in defence and maritime technologies. The collaboration brings together a major public sector warship builder and one of India’s prominent private defence manufacturers as the country continues to push for greater indigenous capability in naval systems.

GRSE, headquartered in Kolkata and operating under the Ministry of Defence, has long been involved in the construction of warships and other vessels for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard. Bharat Forge, through KSSL, has developed a growing defence portfolio spanning artillery systems, armoured platforms and specialised engineering components. The new agreement is intended to combine the shipyard’s experience in naval platform design with Bharat Forge’s expertise in advanced manufacturing and defence systems.

According to the companies, the MoU provides a framework for collaboration in defence and maritime innovation. The two firms will explore opportunities to jointly develop and integrate systems that can be used on naval platforms, while also examining potential engineering solutions for maritime applications.

  • GRSE has delivered and repaired more than 4,000 vessels during World War 2.

  • The company has delivered 109 warships .

  • The shipyard is currently working on several major programmes, including the construction of three stealth frigates under Project 17A and other warfare machinery for the Indian Navy.

On the other hand, Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd. has been expanding its defence manufacturing footprint with artillery platforms, ammunition systems and specialised defence components. The company is also developing the ARDE CQB carbine in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

The collaboration indicates the increasing role of public sector-private partnership in forging the country's defence manufacturing ecosystem. Shipyards such as GRSE focus on building naval platforms, while private companies supply specialised technology for building these vessels.

By combining shipbuilding capability with advanced defence manufacturing, the agreement could help accelerate the development of indigenous technologies for naval platforms.
