Airtel and Tata Teleservices must pay ₹10,000 crore AGR dues by 31 March, including ₹5,000 crore and ₹4,000 crore, respectively, with no relief from DoT. Shares drop by 2-4%.

Bharti Airtel and Tata Teleservices face a 31 March 2026 deadline to pay close to ₹10,000 crore in adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues, as mandated by a Supreme Court order.

Officials from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) have made it clear that, unlike Vodafone Idea, no special relief has been extended to these companies. Failure to pay on time could be treated as contempt of court.

As of 10.30 a.m., 30 March 2026, Bharti Airtel and Tata Teleservices shares are down by over 2% and 4%.

Tata Teleservices owes more than ₹4,000 crore, while Bharti Airtel must pay over ₹5,000 crore of the total. The final payout could be higher once interest is added.

This comes even as Vodafone Idea (Vi) continues to receive staggered repayment support from the government. So why is the treatment different?

The key reason lies in how the earlier relief was structured.

Government officials have indicated that the support extended to Vodafone Idea was specific to that company’s financial condition. The relief allowed Vi to defer payments and spread its AGR dues over a longer period.

For other telecom operators, the position is different. Any similar relief would require approval from the Supreme Court.

Bharti Airtel had earlier written to the DoT seeking reassessment of its dues along similar lines. However, the request was not taken forward.

Officials said that no other telecom company has approached the Supreme Court for such relief so far.

There is also a difference in financial position. Following the 2019 AGR verdict, Airtel has progressively recovered. With a market share of about 40%, it has increased its network, raised funds, and turned a profit.

In contrast, Vodafone Idea’s situation had raised concerns about its survival, which influenced the policy response.

Telecom companies were given a four-year break on AGR payments in September 2021 to ease financial pressure. That window has now closed in 2024–25.

From here, payments move into a fixed schedule. Dues have to be cleared in six annual instalments, starting before the end of 2025–26.

For Airtel and Tata Teleservices, this means there is little flexibility. The timeline stays as it is.

So far, Bharti Airtel has paid around ₹19,000 crore towards its dues. Tata Group has paid close to ₹4,197 crore.

As of December 2025, Tata Group companies (Tata Teleservices & Tata Tele Maharashtra) owed ₹20,426 crore, and Airtel owes ₹51,091 crore.

According to officials, since the payment terms are based on a Supreme Court ruling, failing to pay AGR dues according to the timetable will be considered contempt of court.

At the same time, a separate exercise is underway to reassess Vodafone Idea’s dues, which could further reduce its burden. But this process is limited to Vi and does not apply to other telecom players.

For Airtel and Tata Teleservices, the focus now is on meeting the immediate obligation.
