Cabinet Approves ₹9,072 Crore Rail Projects Across 4 States

Cabinet clears ₹9,072 crore rail projects to add 307 km and boost freight capacity by 52 MTPA across 4 states by 2030–31.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has cleared three railway expansion projects involving an investment of ₹9,072 crore. The decision will add roughly 307 kilometres to the existing rail network across parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand, spanning eight districts.

Officials said the main purpose is to ease pressure on busy rail stretches that currently handle a mix of passenger and freight traffic. Several of these routes are operating close to capacity, particularly in mineral-producing regions.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs gave the go-ahead for three works:

  • Doubling the Gondia–Jabalpur section,
  • Adding third and fourth lines between Punarakh and Kiul, and
  • Laying third and fourth lines between Gamharia and Chandil.

These corridors are important for heavy freight movement. Additional tracks are expected to separate slower freight trains from passenger traffic, which often helps reduce delays.

Once completed, the expanded lines are expected to improve connectivity for about 5,407 villages with a population of nearly 98 lakh. Railway officials said this could make travel and goods movement easier in these districts.

The projects fall under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on linking infrastructure planning across sectors to improve logistics and transport efficiency.

The extra track capacity is expected to handle an additional 52 million tonnes of freight each year.

These routes are used to transport bulk goods such as coal, iron ore, steel, cement, fly ash, fertilisers, limestone, manganese, dolomite, food grains and petroleum products. With more lines available, trains carrying these materials can move with fewer stoppages.

According to official estimates, shifting more cargo to rail could cut oil imports by around 6 crore litres annually. Carbon dioxide emissions are projected to fall by nearly 30 crore kilograms, which authorities say is comparable to planting one crore trees.

Rail transport is widely considered more energy-efficient than road transport for long-distance bulk cargo, particularly in industrial corridors.

Passenger services are also expected to benefit. Additional lines usually allow more train frequency and better punctuality, especially on sections that see heavy usage.

The routes provide access to several tourist destinations, including:

  • Kanha National Park in Balaghat
  • Pench National Park
  • Dhuandhar Waterfall
  • Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Kachnar Shiv Temple in Jabalpur
  • Chandil Dam
  • Dalma Hill Top

Officials improved rail infrastructure can support local economies by encouraging trade and tourism. Better connectivity often creates indirect employment opportunities in transport, hospitality and small businesses.

Instead of just adding new lines into unexplored areas, the larger plan seems to concentrate on bolstering already-existing high-traffic routes. Adding capacity on major routes has become a sensible move as freight loads increase.

The clearance also indicates to investors that government expenditure on railway infrastructure would continue. As these projects approach completion, companies involved in rail construction, engineering services, signalling systems, track laying, and logistics may have project opportunities.
