Alphabet Inc. Plans Major Office Expansion In India

Alphabet Inc, Google’s parent company, is planning a sharp expansion of its physical presence in India and may take up to 2.4 million square feet of new office space in Bengaluru. It is a move that could more than double its workforce footprint in the country, according to people familiar with the matter.

Google’s parent has already leased one office tower and secured options on two additional towers at Alembic City, a commercial development in the Whitefield technology corridor. The first tower is expected to open to employees in the coming months. Construction on the remaining two towers is scheduled to finish next year.

Alphabet’s move is being attributed to the US President Donald Trump’s administration’s move to make it harder and more expensive for companies to bring foreign workers to the US.

The US government has proposed sharply higher fees for H-1B work visas, potentially rising to $100,000 per application. The move has altered the cost calculations for technology firms that rely heavily on Indian engineers.

As a result, companies are increasingly expanding teams outside the US rather than relocating talent. India has emerged as a key destination for this shift, especially as global competition around artificial intelligence intensifies.

Alphabet Inc is not alone. AI-focused companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic PBC, have recently established operations in India. The hiring push reflects a broader strategy among US firms to build core product and research teams in India. Market watchers say that US firms now do not want to treat India only as a support or back-office location.

Notably, last year, Google opened its largest campus in Bangalore. The facility includes workspaces alongside amenities such as indoor sports areas and multiple cafeterias. Since then, Google has posted hundreds of job openings in the city. Roles advertised include:

  • AI practice directors in Google Cloud

  • Machine learning researchers and engineers

  • Chip designers and hardware specialists

  • Senior engineers working on generative AI tools at YouTube

Several of these positions require advanced degrees, including PhDs.

Alphabet’s possible expansion reflects a broader shift in how global technology companies view India. The country is no longer just a support base. Industry watchers believe that it has emerged as a core engineering and product hub.

For investors tracking Indian IT services and office developers, the move highlights continued momentum in global capacity centre (GCC) growth.
