DMART Company background

Founded in: 2000
Managing director: IGNATIUS NAVIL NORONHA

Avenue Supermarts Ltd. (ASL), best known for its DMart retail stores, is a major name in India’s retail industry. The company was founded on May 12, 2000, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, as Avenue Supermarts Private Limited under the Companies Act, 1956. In 2011, it shifted from a private to a public company and became Avenue Supermarts Limited (ASL). This change was officially approved by shareholders through a Special Resolution during an Extraordinary General Meeting on February 1, 2011, and the Registrar of Companies (RoC) issued a new Certificate of Incorporation on May 3, 2011.

Growth and Expansion of DMart Stores

Avenue Supermarts Limited is known mainly for its chain of DMart supermarkets that focus on value retailing by providing a great range of merchandise at affordable prices. DMart started in 2002 with a store in Powai, Mumbai, and its success led to subsequent high growth in the subsequent years. By maintaining a business model that focuses on quality products at reasonable prices, DMart rapidly earned the trust of customers and emerged as a strong player in India's retail sector.

As of 2023, Avenue Supermarts operates more than 324 DMart stores in India, having a retail business space of around 11.5 million square feet. The stores are located across prominent cities and states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and NCR, among others. The expansion of the company in regional markets has also played an important role in increasing its brand image and popularity in the intensely competitive retail business. DMart's presence is characterized by the increasing number of stores serving Indian families' everyday needs, offering home and personal care products all in one place.

DMart’s Diverse Product Range

DMart retail stores provide a wide range of products, ranging from groceries to toiletries, beauty products, home appliances, clothing, kitchenware, bed and bath linens, and so on. The main motive of the company is to provide customers with products that are of basic home utility at reasonable prices. The retail chain is most popular for having products that serve the needs of Indian families, ranging from food and beverages to household and personal care products. For years, DMart has earned a good reputation for providing quality products while keeping prices competitive. The strategy has benefited the company by allowing it to remain in front in the market and win the trust of crores of people across the country.

Key Milestones in DMart’s Growth

Avenue Supermarts has seen strong growth in terms of store count, revenue, and market share since its formation. The revenue of the company has been registering robust growth, achieving major milestones year after year. By 2007, DMart had made an entry into Gujarat by opening its first store in the state. In 2010, the company had reached the milestone of 25 stores with an audited consolidated revenue of over Rs 1000 crore. This was a landmark moment in the growth story of DMart, demonstrating the potential of the company to grow its size and make a significant mark in India's retail industry.

The subsequent years witnessed aggressive growth, with the number of stores reaching 50 in 2012 and 75 stores in 2014. Avenue Supermarts crossed Rs 5000 crore in turnover by 2015, an impressive feat for a single-store company that started as a single-store entity. The company persisted on its growth path, and the number of stores went up to 110 in 2016, and turnover exceeded Rs 7500 crore. This time also witnessed the entry of the company into the capital markets. On March 2, 2017, Avenue Supermarts filed a Red Herring Prospectus with SEBI to raise Rs 1870 crore through its Initial Public Offering (IPO). The IPO was open for subscription between March 8 and March 10, 2017, and was oversubscribed by 73.41 times. The shares of Avenue Supermarts were listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on March 21, 2017, with the stock debuting at Rs 604.40, reflecting a significant 102.14% premium over the issue price of Rs 299 per share.

Strategic Acquisitions and New Ventures

Along with its organic growth based on store expansions, Avenue Supermarts has also made strategic acquisitions to add to its market dominance. An important acquisition took place in February 2018, when it acquired 100% of the shares of Avenue ECommerce Limited, a subsidiary company wholly owned by it. Through this acquisition, Avenue Supermarts has definitely worked on its strengths in e-commerce by improving the visibility of its offline stores on the internet. This inclusion of Avenue ECommerce Limited was indeed a great achievement for the firm, enabling it to capitalize on the expanding market of e-commerce in India and cater to customers more efficiently through online shopping and home delivery services.

DMART Continued Expansion and Innovations

DMART' growth commitment has been quite solid in the last few years. During FY 2019-20, the company had opened 38 new stores, and the next year, in FY 2020-21, it opened 22 new stores. This growth strategy was sustained in 2021-22, with the company opening a record 50 new stores, taking its presence to more than 500 pin codes in nine large cities, namely Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Bhopal, and Indore. The company had 40 distribution centers and seven packing centers as of March 31, 2022, to cater to its increasing retail business.

In FY 2022-23, DMART continued its expansion efforts by adding 40 new stores, bringing the total store count to 324 by the end of the fiscal year. This growth has been driven by the company’s ability to effectively meet the needs of its customers and adapt to changing market conditions. The focus on value retailing, competitive pricing, and customer satisfaction has been key to DMart’s continued success, making it one of the most trusted supermarket chains in India.
