Kotak is all set to acquire Deutsche Bank's India retail arm for ₹4,500 crore to maximise its leverage in the Indian market.

Recently, Kotak Mahindra Bank is set to acquire Deutsche Bank for 45 billion rupees ($480.3 million). This news came to light amid falling key Indian indices and rising global uncertainty. However, the banks have yet to make an official announcement regarding the same. Also, it was noted that Kotak was chosen as the preferred bidder over the Federal Bank.

With a ₹27,000 crore loan and deposit book and a strong presence in affluent urban markets, this deal has the potential to make shifts in the Indian banking industry.

The portfolio includes:

  • Wealth management assets of ₹7,000 crore

  • Net asset value (assets minus liabilities) estimated at ₹4,300 crore

  • Deutsche Bank’s India retail unit operates through 17 branches and generated:

  • ₹2,455 crore revenue in FY25, up by approximately 4% YoY

  • Total assets of ₹25,038 crore as of March 2025

The portfolio comprises personal loans, home loans, MSME lending, deposits, and premium wealth management services.

This selloff highlights Deutsche Bank's increased focus on streamlining its core business operations and maximising its returns. Apart from this, here are some of the key drivers:

  • Strategic global restructuring under CEO Christian Sewing

  • Lower scalability of retail operations in India versus corporate banking

  • Continued trend of foreign banks reducing retail exposure

Plus, this disinvestment also highlights the ongoing trends of foreign banks in reducing their retail operations in the country.

Kotak Mahindra Bank will gain the following strategic advantages after the acquisition:

  • Kotal will gain a strong position in the MSME lending landscape and urban retail markets

  • Deeper market reach into the high-net-worth individual segment

  • Acceleration of growth in wealth management

Kotak already manages wealth for a significant share of India’s top families, and this acquisition further consolidates its positioning in premium banking.
