India plans to buy five more S-400 air defence systems from Russia after initial approval from the Defence Procurement Board, aiming to strengthen aerial defence as missile and drone threats gain importance globally.

The Indian Air Force is set to move ahead with a proposal to buy five more S-400 air defence systems from Russia after receiving clearance from the Defence Procurement Board. This is one of the early approvals needed before a defence purchase moves to the next stage.

The proposal has come at a time when missile and drone attacks are forcing many countries to pay closer attention to air defence systems. But why is India looking to expand its air defence strength at this stage?

The new proposal is for five additional units, which would add to the five systems India had already agreed to buy from Russia under the earlier defence deal signed in 2018. Of those earlier systems, three have already been delivered and deployed, while the remaining two are expected in the coming months.

The S-400 is built to identify and stop threats in the air, including aircraft, drones and missiles, before they come close to target locations. This is one reason it has become an important part of India’s defence setup, especially since it can respond to several threats together.

With the increasing use of ballistic missiles and kamikaze drones in the Middle East, many countries are now working towards strengthening their defence system. The proposal to add five more systems in India is part of this strategy.

India has also seen the value of this missile system in its own operations. During Operation Sindoor, the system helped strengthen the readiness of air defence when India carried out strikes on Pakistani airbases and command centres. In Indian service, the S-400 is known as Sudarshan, a reference to the Sudarshan Chakra from Indian mythology, which is associated with precision and the ability to strike down threats quickly.

This proposal is expected to strengthen India’s air defence preparedness further, as India has to secure long northern and western borders along with an 11,000-km coastline against different kinds of aerial threats.

The clearance from the Defence Procurement Board is only the beginning of the approval chain. The proposal will next be examined by the Defence Acquisition Council, chaired by Rajnath Singh, before it moves to the next stage of financial and contractual approval.

While the final terms of the deal are still being discussed, the plan is to buy all five systems directly. Private sector companies in India may also be involved in the maintenance and repair of the systems post-delivery.

Once the remaining approvals are completed, the focus will shift to delivery timelines and how the new systems fit into India’s existing air defence network.

Such defence-related announcements usually bring investors’ attention to companies involved in equipment supply, electronics, and maintenance. The proposal is still at an early stage, but it shows that defence spending remains important for the government.

Such developments are often tracked closely because they may support future business opportunities for companies linked to the defence sector.
