PNB Company background
Punjab National Bank started its operations in 1895 in Lahore. It was one of the earliest major banks founded entirely by Indian capital. After the partition in 1947, PNB moved its headquarters to New Delhi, becoming an integral part of the banking sector after it was nationalised in 1969.
Over the years, the public sector bank has built a large branch network across the country. It now operates across retail, corporate, and agricultural segments, with a presence outside India as well. Punjab National Bank is listed on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE: PNB) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BOM: 532461).
PNB Business Segments And Revenue Model
Most of the bank’s income comes from interest on loans and investments. The bank has shown a significant tilt towards lending to retail, agriculture and MSME segments. But the largest contributor to its revenue is corporate lending, where large loans are involved. They are usually associated with the business cycle, which is why their performance fluctuates.
In addition to lending income, there are also other sources of income. The bank earns fees for providing various services such as money transfers or trade finance. The bank’s treasury operations are another source of income, which depends on the investment performance of the bank’s holdings in government securities.
