Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Company background
Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited is among India’s major pharmaceutical companies. Over the years, it has built a strong presence in speciality generics across global markets. The business was started in 1983 by Dilip Shanghvi. Early operations were based in Kolkata, with a narrow product focus centred on psychiatry.
It expanded step by step, entering new markets, adding therapies, and later pursuing acquisitions. It is now headquartered in Mumbai and operates across the United States, emerging markets, and several other regions.
Its shares are listed on both major Indian exchanges: NSE: SUNPHARMA on the National Stock Exchange and BOM: 524715 on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
Over time, the product mix has widened considerably. What began with a limited portfolio now covers generics, branded generics, speciality medicines, APIs, and over-the-counter products.
Sun Pharma Business Segments and Revenue Model
Operations cover a broad set of therapeutic areas consisting of cardiology, dermatology, psychiatry, neurology, oncology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, and respiratory care. The product base is aligned with this spread, comprising complex generics, speciality formulations and APIs. These are supplied in multiple formats: tablets, injectables, inhalers, as well as topical treatments.
Revenue mix differs across regions. The United States accounts for the largest share, driven mainly by generics and speciality products. India’s contribution comes from branded formulations. Emerging markets add their share through branded generics.
Revenue does not rely on a single source. Alongside product sales, the company also earns from licensing arrangements, contract manufacturing, and partnerships with other pharmaceutical firms. The speciality segment, dermatology, ophthalmology and oncology in particular, has gradually taken on greater importance within the overall mix.
