CESC Company background

Founded in: 1978

The early history of CESC Limited goes back to the first public demonstration of electric light in Kolkata by P W Fleury & Co. in 1879, followed by organised electric lighting in 1881. The company itself took shape in 1899 and is listed on the National Stock Exchange as (NSE: CESC) and on the Bombay Stock Exchange under the code (BOM: 500084)

Its operations cover electricity generation, transmission, and distribution across Kolkata, Howrah, and adjoining areas. In 1989, CESC was acquired by RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group.

For CESC Limited, electricity supply to Kolkata, Howrah, and surrounding areas continues to account for most of the business. Its consumer base includes households, industries, and commercial establishments within the licensed distribution area. Power is drawn from owned thermal stations such as Budge Budge Generating Station and Southern Generating Station, along with supply from Haldia Thermal Power Station and purchased electricity.

Transmission and distribution form another important part of operations through a wide network built across multiple voltage levels. A smaller part of its portfolio comes from solar plants in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, with captive coal meeting part of its fuel requirement.

  • 1879–1881: Public demonstrations of electric lighting began in Kolkata, starting with P W Fleury & Co. in 1879 and followed by early industrial lighting in 1881.
  • 1897–1899: The electricity licence for Calcutta was secured, and the first generating station at Emambagh Lane began operations in 1899, marking the start of thermal power generation in India.
  • 1902: Electric traction reached the city when Calcutta Tramways shifted from horse-drawn to electric tram services.
  • 1989: Control of the company moved to the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group through acquisition from the London-registered Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (India) Limited.
  • 1990–1991: The Southern Generating Station began supplying power, helping end prolonged load shedding in Kolkata.
  • 1997: Kolkata received the highest power reliability rating among Indian metros in a survey by The Times of India.
  • CESC Limited links its sustainability strategy to supply safe, reliable, and relatively low-carbon electricity while improving operational efficiency across the power value chain.
  • Environmental priorities include climate strategy, water conservation, waste management, pollution control, and biodiversity initiatives at operating locations.
  • Social initiatives focus on community development through education, healthcare, skill development, and environmental awareness programmes such as Indradhanush, Sneh, Sankalp, and Urja Chetana.
  • Safety at the workplace is built around a zero-incident target, with digital training tools and field-level monitoring forming part of daily operations.
  • Systems across several plants are backed by certifications such as ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018, ISO 50001:2015, and ISO 27001.

Awards received by CESC Limited span power generation, distribution, customer service, and social initiatives. Among the recent ones are:

  • At the ICC Environment Excellence Awards 2025, both Budge Budge and Southern Generating Station were recognised with Gold Awards in the power sector category.
  • In distribution, the company was awarded Excellence in Customer Service at the ASSOCHAM Annual Excellence Awards 2025.
  • The IPPAI Power Awards 2025 placed CESC among the best city-based distribution companies.
  • Under CSR, SNEH received recognition at the ICC Social Impact Awards for healthcare work.
