Jindal Steel Company background

Founded in: 1979

Jindal Steel & Power Limited (JSPL), established in 1994 by Om Prakash Jindal and currently led by Naveen Jindal, is headquartered in New Delhi. It is one of India’s leading steel and energy companies, listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange. The company is engaged in steel manufacturing, power generation, and mining operations. It is the third-largest private steel producer in India, operating integrated facilities in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand. JSPL is known for manufacturing rails, hot-rolled plates, coils, sponge iron, and iron-ore pellets and operates significant captive power plants.

Jindal Steel & Power operates in three core verticals:

  • Steel Manufacturing: Produces rails, plates, coils, TMT bars, and structural steel from integrated facilities in Angul, Patratu, and Barbil. The company also utilises coal gasification technology for steelmaking at its Angul plant.
  • Mining: Owns and operates captive coal and iron ore mines in India and abroad. It has assets in Mozambique, South Africa, and Australia, ensuring raw material security for its steel operations.
  • Power Generation: Operates power plants with a combined capacity exceeding 5 GW, including thermal and captive units, primarily to support steel production.

Revenue is generated through domestic and export sales of steel products, income from captive mining operations, and electricity generation. The company benefits from a backward-integrated structure and is expanding its presence in clean energy and green steel initiatives.
