Adani Power Company background

Founded in: 1996

Adani Power Limited was incorporated on August 22, 1996, and commenced operations shortly thereafter. It is headquartered at Adani Corporate House in Shantigram, Khodiyar, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Adani Power is a publicly traded company listed on both BSE (533096) and NSE (ADANIPOWER), operating under the broader Adani Group conglomerate. The company specialises in thermal power generation, leveraging coal-based plants alongside a small-scale solar portfolio.

Adani Power’s operations primarily cover two verticals: Power Generation and Trading & Investments. Under Power Generation, it operates several major thermal power stations – most notably the Mundra Thermal Power Plant (4,620 MW across nine units), Kawai (1,320 MW), Tiroda (3,300 MW), Raikheda (1,370 MW), and the Godda plant (1,600 MW) geared partly toward exports. Its solar segment includes the 40 MW Bitta Solar Plant in Gujarat. Revenue is generated through long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with various state utilities across India, supplemented by energy trading, and returns from strategic investments.

  • 1996: Incorporated on August 22; conversion from private to public limited status completed by April 2007.
  • 2009–2012: Commissioned the Mundra plant in phases; began with 330 MW unit in 2009 and added supercritical 660 MW units by 2012, bringing total capacity to 4,620 MW, then India's largest private thermal power plant.
  • 2011: Launched 40 MW Bitta Solar Power Plant, the country’s largest PV installation at the time.
  • 2015–2019: Expanded via acquisitions – Udupi Power (1,200 MW) in 2015, Raikheda (1,370 MW) in 2019, among others.
  • 2024: Acquired Lanco Amarkantak assets; also purchased the 600 MW Butibori plant from Reliance (Vidarbha Industries Power Ltd), boosting capacity in the region.
  • 2025: Acquired Vidarbha Industries Power Ltd (VIPL) fully, pushing total generation capacity to 18,150 MW. Announced a major new 2,400 MW thermal power project in Bhagalpur, Bihar, with a Letter of Intent secured. Also placed an ultra-mega order of 6,400 MW thermal units with L&T.
  • While chiefly a thermal (coal) power provider, Adani Power has made forays into solar energy, as seen in its Bitta plant—signalling early diversification into renewables.
  • The company maintains high operational standards in plant performance and financing models, including globally benchmarked O&M practices.
  • Its power projects, particularly newer ones, indicate attempts to align with India’s overall energy transition strategy, though it remains predominantly conventional in its energy mix.
  • Honoured as “Most Innovative Young Power Professional” by IPPAI in 2017 for leadership innovation.
  • Recognised for Best Environmental Management Practices in Asia the same year.
  • Commended for sustainability reporting, including accolades from CSR Works International in partnership with British Chamber and Canadian High Commission.
