Founded in: 1973

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), incorporated originally as Mynylon Ltd in 1973, traces its roots back to 1958 under founder Dhirubhai Ambani. The company eventually became Reliance Industries Limited in 1986. Its registered office is located at Maker Chambers IV, Nariman Point, Mumbai, Maharashtra. Listed on both BSE (500325) and NSE (RELIANCE), with GDRs also on London and Luxembourg exchanges, RIL is a diversified conglomerate operating across energy, petrochemicals, refining, retail, telecommunications, media, and more.

RIL’s core revenue streams stem from distinct verticals: Oil-to-Chemicals (O2C) (refining, petrochemicals, oil & gas), Retail, and Digital Services (telecom, media, entertainment). The O2C segment powers its earnings through global-scale refining and chemicals operations. Retail, spanning groceries, fashion, electronics, consumer durables, pharmacy, and more, provides domestic consumer reach and includes acquisitions like Metro Cash & Carry, Netmeds, and Just Dial. Digital Services via Jio Platforms delivers wireless telecom, broadband, enterprise services, and technology-driven content. The company earns through product sales, services, subscriptions, advertising, and strategic investments.

  • 1958-1973: Founded as Reliance Commercial Corporation (1958), evolved into Reliance Textiles Industries Ltd (1966), and finally incorporated as public Mysylon/Mynylon Ltd in 1973.
  • 1977-1986: Launched an IPO in 1977 (oversubscribed 7x); transitioned to public company status by 1986–87.
  • 1991-92: Commissioned Hazira petrochemical plant; Jamnagar Refinery operational by 1999 and expanded to the world’s largest refining complex.
  • 1995-98: Entered telecom via Reliance Telecom; acquired IPCL and launched packaged LPG and Jamnagar complex.
  • 2002-08: Merged Reliance Petroleum (2002) and completed IPCL integration (2008).
  • 2006: Launched Reliance Fresh retail chain, marking entry into organised retail.
  • 2010: Acquired Infotel Broadband (Jio’s foundation) and partnered with BP in oil & gas.
  • 2019-22: Consolidated Jio Platforms; key acquisitions including Radisys, Den, Hathway, Hamleys, Netmeds, Just Dial, Metro Cash & Carry.
  • 2022-24: Merged Disney Star with Viacom18 (Feb 2024, closed Nov 2024, ~$8.5B JV).
  • 2024-25: Announced Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex (renewables gigafactories) in Jamnagar; struck chip supply pact with Nvidia (Oct 2024).
  • 2025: Entered defence manufacturing via Jai Ammunition, Rheinmetall, Diehl; drone tech via Asteria Aerospace; acquired 74% stake in Navi Mumbai IIA.
  • Reliance Foundation focuses on education, healthcare, rural transformation, and livelihoods, impacting millions of lives.
