Commodity derivatives trading in India got a dedicated electronic platform with the launch of Multi-Commodity Exchange of India Limited, headquartered in Mumbai, in November 2003. The exchange's shares are publicly traded on both the National Stock Exchange under MCX (NSE: MCX) and the Bombay Stock Exchange under the code 534091 (BOM: 534091)
MCX Business Segments And Revenue Model
Commodity derivative trading on Multi Commodity Exchange of India Limited extends across bullion, industrial metals, energy products, and agricultural commodities. Alongside futures and options across major commodity categories, the exchange also runs the MCX iCOMDEX series, a set of real-time commodity price indices that reflect movement across key segments traded on its platform.
Revenue is generated mainly through transaction fees charged on trades executed through its electronic platform. Additional income comes from clearing and settlement services handled by Multi Commodity Exchange Clearing Corporation Limited (MCXCCL), its wholly owned subsidiary, along with membership-related charges and other exchange-linked services.
By the end of December 2025, the exchange network had 568 registered members and 32,716 authorised persons spread across the country.
MCX Key Milestones
- 2002–2003: MCX was incorporated in 2002 and began operations on 10 November 2003.
- 2005–2008: Licensing arrangements with the London Metal Exchange and CME Group were followed by membership in the International Organisation of Securities Commissions.
- 2012: MCX became India’s first publicly listed exchange.
- 2017–2019: Gold options were introduced, MCXCCL gained clearing corporation recognition, and MCX iCOMDEX was launched.
- 2020–2021: Bullion, base metal and energy index futures were added, while MCX joined the international bullion exchange framework at GIFT City.
- 2023–2025: The trading platform was migrated, and new products included electricity, steel rebar, nickel futures, and MCX BULLDEX options.
