Central Bank of India Company background
The Central Bank of India is a public sector bank headquartered in Mumbai. The bank’s journey began in 1911. It was founded by Sir Sorabji Pochkhanawala with the idea of creating an Indian-owned commercial bank at a time when foreign banks dominated the sector. Sir Pherozeshah Mehta became its first Chairman, and the bank gradually came to be associated with the broader Swadeshi movement of that era.
Over the years, it has built a nationwide presence. Its shares are listed on Indian stock exchanges under the ticker NSE: CENTRALBK on the NSE and BOM: 532885 on the BSE.
Central Bank Of India Business Segments And Revenue Model
Retail, MSME, agriculture, and corporate banking make up the bank’s main segments. Deposits and lending continue to drive the business, supported by its physical and digital reach.
Retail banking is largely centered around housing loans, personal loans, and vehicle finance. MSME lending, meanwhile, supports smaller businesses across manufacturing, services, and trading.
Agriculture remains another part of the mix. This includes crop loans and financing linked to farm equipment and rural requirements. On the corporate side, the bank works with larger businesses through products such as working capital finance, trade finance, and project lending.
The bank's reach is supported by a large physical network. There are 4,545 branches and 4,085 ATMs, along with a wide business correspondent network.
At the same time, digital usage has been rising. Mobile banking users were around 91.9 lakh, and UPI users crossed 41 lakhs. Daily transactions are now close to 1 crore.
Partnerships add another layer. The bank works with NBFCs and HFCs through co-lending, with 34 such tie-ups in place.
