Bharat Forge has secured a ₹425-crore Indian Navy contract for 12 marine gas turbine generators, marking a major defence milestone. Find out why the deal matters and what's next. Read more.

A ₹425-crore contract for 12 marine gas turbine generators has been awarded to Bharat Forge by the Ministry of Defence, giving the company a foothold in a new defence manufacturing segment. The generators, each rated at 1.25 MW, will be supplied to the Indian Navy over five years and will carry at least 60% indigenous content.

Bharat Forge shares are expected to remain in focus following the announcement. The stock has risen around 5% in the past two weeks and has managed to stay in positive territory for a second straight week.

On Monday, 22 June, at 11:25 AM, Bharat Forge shares were trading 0.08% higher at ₹2,043.00.

The order involves gas turbine generators that will be fitted on Kolkata-class destroyers of the Indian Navy. These units will replace smaller generators currently operating on the vessels.

While the contract value itself is sizeable, the bigger takeaway may be what comes next. This is Bharat Forge's first entry into the marine gas turbine generator business. The project is also expected to lead to the deployment of the first indigenous gas turbine-based power plant on an Indian naval ship.

The Defence Ministry said the programme would support local manufacturing and strengthen India's ability to produce critical naval equipment within the country.

The Navy order comes shortly after a series of announcements from Bharat Forge's defence subsidiary, Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd (KSSL).

Earlier this month, KSSL teamed up with US-based AM General to work on mounted artillery gun platforms for overseas markets. It also introduced the Simha 4x4 armoured vehicle with Paramount and displayed its MArG range of mounted artillery guns.

Taken together, the developments show Bharat Forge steadily widening its presence across different areas of defence manufacturing, from land systems to naval equipment.
