The US and Iran have agreed on a 60-day roadmap to finalise a peace agreement following high-level talks in Burgenstock, Switzerland, mediated by Qatar and Pakistan. Technical negotiations are set to continue through the week. Read ahead to know more.

A new phase in diplomacy between Washington and Tehran has begun. Mediators Qatar and Pakistan announced on Monday that the first round of high-level talks under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) concluded at Burgenstock, Switzerland, with both sides agreeing on a 60-day roadmap to work towards a final peace agreement.

The joint statement from the two mediators described the atmosphere as positive and constructive, with encouraging progress made on key issues.

Several concrete outcomes emerged from the first session. A high-level committee has been established to provide political oversight of the mediation process, with chief negotiators reporting directly to this body. These negotiators will lead separate working groups covering nuclear-related matters, sanctions, monitoring mechanisms and dispute resolution.

A direct communication channel between the US and Iran has also been set up to reduce the risk of misunderstandings and manage incidents during the negotiation period. One of its specific functions will be to facilitate safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route that has been at the centre of the conflict.

A de-confliction cell involving Iran, the US and Lebanon, facilitated by Qatar and Pakistan, has also been agreed upon. This body will monitor the cessation of military operations in Lebanon and work to prevent fresh clashes. The Lebanese government is also expected to be included in this mechanism.

Despite the progress, the situation in Lebanon remains unresolved. Iran has tied the success of these talks to a halt in fighting there, while Israel has insisted it will maintain a free hand to operate against Hezbollah, which has been launching attacks into northern Israel from Lebanese territory. Whether the de-confliction cell will be sufficient to stop hostilities remains an open question.

The talks were not without friction. The Iranian delegation briefly walked out on Sunday after US President Donald Trump issued threats on social media, warning of further strikes on Iran and raising the possibility of taking control of the Strait of Hormuz. The comments complicated efforts by US Vice President JD Vance and the mediators to keep Iran at the table.

Iran's lead negotiator warned that their armed forces were prepared to respond, though Iran's Foreign Minister later praised the mediation efforts and said the talks had delivered meaningful progress on Lebanon. Technical-level talks are expected to continue at Burgenstock through the rest of the week.
