AIF full form is an Alternative investment fund. AIFs are a unique type of investment which are quite different from traditional investment assets. They are privately pooled funds. AIFs often need large investments, thus, institutions and high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) invest in them.
The SEBI Alternative Investment Funds Regulations implemented in 2012, apply to these investment vehicles. AIFs may be incorporated as a company, trust, LLP (Limited Liability Partnership), or legal entity.
