Swiggy Share Price Recovers After 17% Crash; Instamart Losses Widen Despite Stronger Food Delivery Profitability
Swiggy shares rebound after a 17% crash as food delivery profits rise, while Instamart's quarterly losses widen to ₹895 crore.

Swiggy shares recovered after a sharp sell-off following its second-quarter results for financial year 2026-27 (Q2FY27). While the food delivery business recorded stronger profitability and growth, mounting losses at quick commerce arm Instamart weighed on investor sentiment. The company’s overall net loss narrowed year-on-year, but spending on dark stores and customer acquisition continues to raise questions about the pace of Instamart’s path to profitability.

Swiggy shares rebounded on Monday after a steep decline in the previous session, as investors assessed the contrasting performance of its food delivery and quick commerce businesses. The recovery followed a sell-off triggered by the company’s September-quarter earnings, which highlighted the cost of competing in the fast-growing quick commerce market.

The company reported a narrower consolidated net loss for the quarter. However, the improvement failed to reassure investors fully, as Instamart’s operating losses widened amid increased spending to attract customers, encourage repeat orders and expand its delivery infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the food delivery business continued to strengthen its financial performance. Higher gross order value and improved operating profitability offered some support, although concerns over the cost of scaling quick commerce remain central to the company’s near-term outlook.

Swiggy shares rose nearly 7% on Monday at 01:17 pm to ₹187.75 apiece, up 6.73% on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) after touching a lifetime low of ₹174.95 in the previous session. The stock had fallen nearly 17% on Friday following the earnings announcement.

The broader decline remains substantial:

  • Weekly performance: Down more than 20%.
  • Monthly performance: Down 31%.
  • Calendar-year performance: Down more than 53% in 2026.
  • One-year performance: Down approximately 57%.

The stock’s market capitalisation stood at slightly above ₹50,320 crore.

Food delivery remained Swiggy’s stronger-performing business during the quarter. Gross order value (GOV) increased 17.7% year-on-year to ₹10,054 crore, while adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose 42% to ₹341 crore, marking a quarterly record for the segment.

Instamart, however, continued to absorb significant investment. Its adjusted EBITDA loss widened to ₹895 crore from ₹849 crore in the year-ago quarter and ₹778 crore in the June quarter. Swiggy added 69 net dark stores during the period to strengthen its presence in a highly competitive market.

The widening losses underline the challenge of balancing expansion with operating efficiency. Spending on infrastructure and customer incentives may support order growth, but the pace at which these investments translate into sustainable profitability remains a key concern.

Swiggy’s consolidated net loss narrowed to ₹922 crore from ₹1,092 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. The improvement reflected progress at the overall business level, but Instamart’s growing losses continued to cloud the results.

Profitability gains in food delivery offer the company some financial reassurance. The quick commerce business faces a less favourable equation, with cost efficiency and loss reduction still requiring attention.
