RIL Selloff Wipes Nearly ₹4 Lakh Crore From Market Value As Shares Fall 21% In 2026
RIL shares fall 21% in 2026 as energy pressures, windfall tax and Jio IPO concerns weigh on investors.

Reliance Industries shares plunge 21% in 2026, wiping out nearly Rs 4 lakh crore from market cap. The stock has been under pressure from the energy sector, volatile global oil prices and concerns about the Jio listing.

Reliance Industries (RIL) has seen a sharp erosion in its market value in 2026 with its shares falling 21 per cent so far this year. The decline has wiped nearly ₹4 lakh crore from the market value of India's most valuable company.

The stock has underperformed the broader Nifty 50, which is down around 11% over the same period. Reliance carries a nearly 8% weight in the index, making its weakness significant for the benchmark as well.

Pressure is building across parts of RIL's energy business, while concerns grow around its upcoming Jio listing and wider market uncertainty. The selloff comes against that backdrop. Global oil market disruptions have added to the pressure following the escalation of the Middle East conflict.

Here is how the Reliance Industries shares have performed so far in 2026:

  • 2026 performance: Down 21% so far

  • Market value erosion: Nearly ₹4 lakh crore

  • Nifty 50 performance: Down around 11%

  • Index weight: Nearly 8%

The stock has remained under pressure despite an improvement in refining and petrochemical margins, with concerns around the energy business and the outlook for the group's valuation weighing on sentiment.

RIL faced another setback in March when the government reintroduced windfall taxes on diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) exports. The move reversed an earlier decision to scrap the levy as authorities adjusted revenue measures amid volatility in global oil prices.

Reliance is a major exporter of both fuels. Its Jamnagar refineries produce nearly 5 million tonnes of ATF annually, with a substantial portion exported. The facilities account for roughly one-fourth of India's total ATF production.

The disruption has also affected the oil-to-chemicals business. Higher crude premiums, freight costs and fuel retail under-recoveries have offset some of the benefit from stronger refining and petrochemical margins.

Reliance's business mix is also changing. Jio and Retail now contribute more than half of the company's EBITDA, while the consumer businesses continued to perform relatively well in the June quarter.

At the same time, investor attention is turning to the proposed Jio listing. A fresh issue structure could affect the holding-company discount applied to Reliance, adding another factor to the stock's valuation debate.

A few developments could shape the stock in the coming months:

Jio IPO pricing and structure

Timing and scale of the next telecom tariff increase

Stability in refining margins

Progress in Reliance's new-energy initiatives

The energy business is facing external pressures. At the same time, its consumer businesses are taking on a larger role. The market is weighing near-term earnings pressures against Reliance's wider growth plans.
