Wockhardt, Mankind Pharma, Sun Pharma Lead Pharma Stocks Higher As Nifty Pharma Rises 1.5%

Wockhardt, Mankind Pharma and Sun Pharma lead pharma stocks higher as Nifty Pharma rises 1.5%. Here’s what is driving the sector rally and the key stocks in focus.
Pharma stocks were in demand on Monday, with Wockhardt, Mankind Pharma and Sun Pharma leading gains as investors rotated towards defensive sectors amid weakness in IT and banking stocks. The Nifty Pharma index rose as much as 1.51% to 27,115.90, extending its gains for a third straight session.
The buying comes against a cautious broader-market backdrop, with investors seeking stability amid tighter global monetary conditions and elevated energy prices. Falling crude prices also offered some support to Indian pharma companies, particularly given the sector's large export exposure and the potential impact of lower freight costs.
Nifty Pharma Rises 1.5% As Pharma Stocks See Broad-Based Buying
The Nifty Pharma index climbed 1.51% at its intraday high on Monday, compared with the previous close of 26,710.10. By 11:27 am, the index had pared some gains but was still trading around 1.2% higher at 27,046.
The sector's strength was broad-based, with Wockhardt and Mankind Pharma among the top gainers. Sun Pharma, Torrent Pharma, Laurus Labs, Biocon, Lupin and Dr Reddy's Laboratories were also trading higher during the session.
The Nifty Pharma index has now gained 3.26% over three consecutive trading sessions, according to Business Standard, indicating that the move has extended beyond a single-session bounce.
Wockhardt, Mankind Pharma, Sun Pharma Lead Gains
Wockhardt was among the strongest performers, rising as much as 5.46% during the session. Mankind Pharma also gained up to 5.8% in early trade, while Sun Pharma, Torrent Pharma advanced nearly 3%. Laurus Labs and Biocon were among the other notable gainers.
At around 10:30 am, Wockhardt was up 4.17%, Mankind Pharma 3.78% and Sun Pharma 2.43%. Biocon, Laurus Labs and Torrent Pharma were also higher, according to market data.
The breadth of the move suggests that Monday's rally was not limited to one or two company-specific developments. Instead, buying was spread across large- and mid-cap pharma stocks as the sector gained favour in a cautious market.
Why Are Pharma Stocks Rising Today?
A key driver behind the move is sector rotation. With IT and banking stocks facing selling pressure, investors have been moving towards defensive segments such as pharmaceuticals, healthcare and FMCG for relative stability.
The shift comes after major global central banks raised interest rates, while concerns around inflation and energy prices have kept investors cautious. In such an environment, pharmaceutical companies can attract interest because demand for medicines tends to be less sensitive to economic cycles than many other areas of the market.
Lower crude prices are another supportive factor. Brent crude fell around 2% on Monday to about $101.7 a barrel, with hopes of improved Saudi shipments easing some supply concerns. For Indian drugmakers, lower energy and freight costs can provide some relief, particularly for companies with significant export operations.
Biocon Shares Rise After EMA Development
Biocon was also among the pharma stocks gaining on Monday, but its move had an additional company-specific trigger.
Biocon Biologics said the European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use had issued a positive opinion recommending marketing authorisation for its Pertuzumab biosimilar, Pebrilzo, for HER2-positive breast cancer. The company said the recommendation covers treatment across multiple stages of the disease.
Biocon shares climbed nearly 3% in intraday trade following the announcement, with the stock touching ₹395.10. The EMA development gives the company a potential new product opportunity in the European market and added to the broader positive sentiment around pharma stocks.
US Market Remains Key
Despite the positive sentiment, the US market remains an important factor for Indian pharmaceutical companies. Indian drugmakers have a significant presence in the US, making pricing, regulatory decisions, trade policies and demand in the world's largest pharmaceutical market important for their earnings outlook.
The sector's broader growth prospects are also being supported by rising healthcare demand, greater affordability and continued investment in new treatments and therapies. However, individual stocks can still see different earnings trends depending on their product mix, geographical exposure and regulatory developments.
Monday's move puts pharma among the stronger pockets of the market as investors look for defensive opportunities amid broader uncertainty. The Nifty Pharma index's three-session rise and the participation of several heavyweight stocks point to broad buying interest rather than a rally confined to one counter.
For investors tracking the sector, the focus will now be on whether the buying momentum continues and whether more company-specific developments support the broader move. Wockhardt, Mankind Pharma and Sun Pharma remain among the key stocks in focus, while Biocon's European regulatory development provides an additional catalyst to watch.
