Stock Market Update 22 July 2026: Sensex Falls Over 400 Pts; Nifty 50 Below 24,100

The Indian stock market indices traded in the red during early trading on Wednesday. While Sensex lost over 400 points, Nifty 50 traded below 24,100. Sectoral indices, meanwhile, were trading in mixed directions.
The Indian stock market indices were trading lower after the market opening on Wednesday, 22 July 2026.
At around 9:18 AM, the Sensex was down by around 403 points (0.52%) to trade at 77,066.79. The Nifty 50 was also trading lower by around 105 points (0.44%) at 24,082.35.
Notably, on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, the indices closed in the red as continued tensions between the US and Iran impacted investors’ sentiments. At the closing bell, the Sensex stood at 77,470.11, down 0.31%. The Nifty 50 stood at 24,187.70, down 0.21%.
How Are Other Indices Performing?
Not just the Sensex and the Nifty 50, but most other Indian indices were in the red during early trading on Wednesday.
At around 9:20 AM, Bank Nifty was down by 358 points (0.62%) to trade at 57,477.20. The Nifty Financial Services index was also down by around 0.60% to trade at 26,372.10.
Among the sectoral indices, Nifty Auto (up 0.68%), Nifty FMCG (up 0.20%) and Nifty Metal (up 0.13%) were trading in the green. On the other hand, Nifty Pharma (down 0.99%), Nifty PSU Bank (down 0.79%) and Nifty IT (down 0.63%) were in the red.
Top Gainers And Losers
At 9:15 AM on Wednesday, about 1,069 shares were in the green, while 1,187 shares were in the red. 167 shares remained unchanged.
The top gainers on Nifty included Bajaj Auto, ONGC, Maruti Suzuki, Hindalco and Nestle.
The top losers were Interglobe Aviation, Cipla, Max Healthcare, Sun Pharma and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories.
What About The Global Markets?
Global markets gave mixed cues on Wednesday morning amid escalating Middle East tension and high crude prices.

S&P 500 futures were little changed as of 11:50 AM Tokyo time.

Japan’s Topix rose 1.3%.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.2%.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 0.7%.

The Shanghai Composite rose 0.3%.
