Indian stock markets swung rapidly between losses and gains in early morning trade before trading lower as noon approached. The US Mid-term elections and global crude oil prices weighed heavily on investor sentiment.

At around 11:44 AM, the BSE Sensex stood at 76,864.55, down 53.30 points or 0.07%. At one point in early morning trade, the index gained over 400 points to touch an intraday high of 77,396.04. Meanwhile, the Nifty 50 stood at 23,794.00, down 16.85 points, or 0.07%.

Broader markets, however, were in the green, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 trading 0.68% and 0.92% higher, respectively, at 11:49 am. All sectoral indices were also trading higher, except the Nifty IT and the Nifty Private Bank.

At around 11:50 am, the top five gainers on the Nifty 50 index were:

  • Hitachi Energy

  • Muthoot Finance

  • Adani Enterprises

  • Bharat Electronics Ltd.

  • Adani Power

For the remainder of the session, the Sensex and Nifty 50 are likely to remain sensitive to the US Mid-term election results. A change in control can lead to temporary gains. Investors will also monitor stock-specific actions.
