Closing Bell, 28 July 2026

Sensex and Nifty ended in the negative after a range-bound session. Also, broader markets showed caution with mixed signals. Read more.

The Sensex and Nifty today were in a narrow range and ended the trading session slightly in the red. Upon close, the Nifty 50 stood at 23,985.35, down 0.04%. The BSE Sensex stood at 76,765.92, down 0.09%.

Broader markets ended on a mixed note. The Nifty Midcap 100 index ended 0.08% higher. The Nifty Smallcap 100 index, however, ended 0.22% lower. On the sectoral front, the Nifty IT ended the day on a solid footing. It ended 3.32% higher. The Nifty PSU Bank, however, declined and ended 0.96% lower.

Stocks of the following entities were the top five gainers and losers in the Nifty 50 today:

Crude oil prices continued to witness a decline following some sort of stability in the Middle East. At 15:36, Brent oil futures for October 2026 stood at $83.83 per barrel. During the same time, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures for September 2026 stood at $80.76 per barrel.

Some of the other significant headlines of the day are as follows:

  • Fundraising through mainboard and small and mid-sized enterprises initial public offerings (IPOs) and qualified institutional placements (QIPs) touched a 20-month high in July with nearly 36 companies raising around ₹52,300 crore through them.

  • Tata Power will commence construction of its ₹6,600-crore, 10-Gigawatt (GW) photovoltaic wafer and ingot manufacturing facility in Odisha later this year in October.

Gold and silver traded lower on the Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX). At 15:38, gold August futures on the MCX stood at ₹1,41,638 per 10 grams, down 1%. September silver futures during the same time stood at ₹2,16.993 per kg, down 1.89%.

Although the Sensex and Nifty ended higher, mixed performance in the broader market reflected cautious investor sentiment. Geopolitical developments surrounding the Middle East will continue to dominate in the upcoming trading sessions.
